The Role
I enjoyed my placement immensely, I'd do it again if I could.
I was made to feel part of the team working on problems as challenging and important as anyone else in the group.
My line manager took every opportunity to ensure that my career at DSTL didn't end with my placement. I was given access to courses, training and advice.
I was able to work at my own pace, choose my own projects and receive support from my colleagues.
I was given as much responsibility as any other team member, and I was able to initiate my own project and was tasked a team member of my own.
The project planning experience I received on my placement stood me in good stead for my 1st, 2nd and 3rd year projects, as did my team working and communication skills.
The Company
We were all good friends in the building, pub meals on special occasions, sport clubs, cross company societies and networks of communication. I still visit for the Christmas dinner and socials. There were other students at dstl with me, so there was always a laugh going on somewhere.
HR always has its issues, but my placement was very well coordinated. I was put in contact with the other placement students well in advance and we arranged group accommodation. I now return to work every summer on a very lucrative long term contract.
I received official training in communication, presentation, project planning and line management. The company has invested in my long term employment by continuing to support me while I'm in university.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Above 25 days holiday
Working from home
I have officially got a guaranteed job interview once I finish university.
The Culture
As previously mentioned.
The socialising was of good quality, but it wasn't cheap. I was living in South London.
There were lots of pubs. Not much night life.
I made my own opportunities, I lived in quite a quiet area.
