    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Unilever was a really exciting place to work. There is a great atmosphere with the other placement students and I enjoyed being given a fair amount of responsibility and flexibility.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I definitely came away feeling valued. As the projects I was working on were useful and relevant to the work of my colleagues I felt like a fundamental part of the team by the end of the year.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • There was a good amount of training available, and it was tailored to each individual employee so you could pick and choose what skills to develop. My manager gave me the time to learn new things and widen my skill set.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • For most of the placement I was very busy, although towards the end when I was wrapping up and handing over all of my projects it was hard to get stuck in to anything...

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given responsibility over projects, this was probably one of my favourite things about working at Unilever.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My degree was not related to the placement, but from a business point of view and learning the ins and outs of a large company it was a very useful year.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • There was a good vibe from the office, the open plan setup worked well as it allowed you to rub shoulders with the leadership team on a daily basis

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Unilever has a solid set up for students, with a buddy system and continuous involvement from the HR environment

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was put on training courses to learn new skills and I was also able to spend some time training on some of the software/hardware that we were working with.

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Unilever are a great company to work for, but I am not sure which department I would work for in the future.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, and over the summer there were summer placement students also. We organised events amongst ourselves and kept in contact throughout the year.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I was living at home, but from other students' experiences it seems as though it was rather expensive, although if your main office was inside the M25 you received a "London living allowance".

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I worked in two offices, one in Surrey and one on Embankment in London. The Surrey office didn't have very much in the way of social opportunity but the City of London was great

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Not to a great extent, although we had a few volunteering opportunities.
