    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Had a lot of freedom in developing my assigned projects, in terms of research, contacting suppliers, chemical formulation and experiment design and execution, as well as sensory testing and data compilation.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Very welcoming and helpful colleauges; wonderful department. Very lovely, supportive, people.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Very supportive and helpful managerial staff, from line manager to the Global Director (Polishes).

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Very busy most of the time. There is a considerable workload.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Quite a lot for a student. Given significant freedom in development of assigned projects.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Invaluable skills in terms of time management, experement design, research, experience in business relations with suppliers and manufacturers, consultants, marketing representitives, etc. Whole sphere of areas of gained expertise, as well as a good chemical background in colloid (emulsion) chemistry.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Professional but fun and relaxed. Everyone was very friendly and at ease with eachother, but also very focused on their work.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement was organised well. The additional work for university was difficult, but doable. The placement at the company was very well organised.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was invited to participate in some training programmes and courses, but many were not available to me as a student.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Employement is possible, but as with any company, it depends on the person and the whether they fit the job description. But good reccomendations carry weight.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Friendly students, who went out regularly. Colleagues were very fun as well. A lot of young people work there, so there is always a good social scene.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Moderate. Not London though.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Not bad, quite a few good clubs/bars/pubs throughout the city.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • If you could find time to sign up to things like the gym, but that wasn't always possible.
