The Role
I have really enjoyed this internship. Although the work was a bit slow to start off with, due to IT problems, as we approach the coffee morning date many more tasks have arisen. I have undertaken a variety of tasks including being interviewed on local radio, writing press releases and giving talks during school assemblies. Overall the internship has been a great experience for me and I would recommend it!
My manager is always happy help, and on the occasions where I have worked with other team members they have also been very supportive. At meetings my ideas are listened to and there is a good sense of team work, which is especially nice as everyone is working remotely.
There has been a lot of support in place from my manager, tasks have been well explained and she is always there if I need extra guidance.
This varied a lot over the course of the internship. The workload has steadily increased as we get closer to the Coffee Morning day. However, you have the freedom to manage your own time and make sure your days are varied.
I was surprised at how much responsibility I was given! I had my own list of schools and corporates to support, from making initial contact to giving talks and attending some of their coffee mornings. By having my own workload it made it easier to manage my diary as I knew what I needed to prioritise and it was also useful in building relationships as the supporters had a point of contact within Macmillan.
Experience of working with the local media will definitely be of benefit as I am keen to pursue a career in this area. Also, tasks such as school talks and having to build relationships with various people has increased my confidence in public speaking and communications.
The Company
My internship was remote working, so I was based at home a lot of the time. However, I had regular meetings with my manager and also attended team meetings on a monthly basis which was a great way to get to know the other team members.
The IT side of the internship was very poor. It took 7 weeks for me to gain access to my emails, and even now, at the end of the internship I do not have access to all of the portal. I have managed to get around this by my manager and staff in the Coffee Morning team sending the documents I need via email, but it would have been a lot easier if I could access the shared document and toolkits. However, I was given a clear plan of what was expected of me during the internship in my induction which my manager continuously referred to, so the workload side of things was definitely well organised.
I was not given an official training for any of my tasks, instead my manager went through what would be expected of me. There was an induction day in London, but I felt this was more targeted towards interns working in the London offices, UKO and for the amount of time and money spent on travel, it did not seem worth it.
Flexi Time
Working from home
I will definitely keep looking for potential job opportunities within Macmillan. However, as most of the jobs are in UKO I'm not sure how likely I would be to move to London.
The Culture
Being based outside of UKO and a remote worker, there was not really a social scene. However I did receive numerous invites to socials happening in the London offices, and had I been based closer to London I probably would have attended.

There have been opportunities to attend other fundraising events, such as the Great North Run and individual fundraising events.
