    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I was exposed me to live projects and gained a valuable experience that I am certain will help me with my future career and during my final year of university.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • From day one, I was introduced to everyone. I felt a member of the team and as my capabilities and skill-set grew I felt like a core member of the mobile development team. Everyone was always willing to help out.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Management at Atos are more than happy to give support whenever requested, regardless of how important/serious the request was. Equally, whilst on my project my supervisor spent a considerable amount of time supporting me and mentoring me through my tasks at hand where and when I needed it.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Day-to-day varies on how busy you are. At the very beginning of my placement I didn't have much work to do but this was partly down to the timing of me starting. So tasks had already been distributed. But was mainly down to me not having the necessary training and knowledge. However, this didn't mean I was left with nothing to do. If there was no tasks to be assigned we were asked to do some online training, which were very beneficial. As my knowledge and skill-set grew I was given more than enough work to keep me busy, but i never felt over-worked or stressed. I feel I could have done with having slightly more work to do at the beginning of my placement.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As I gained more experience I was given the opportunity to take the role of Project Manager for a week on one of the projects within my team. This was a live project for real customers outside the company. I was trusted to allocate work out between our team and sit in the online scrums on a morning to discuss the progress and take notes on what is left to be done. Furthermore, on numerous occasions I was given the opportunity with my manager to go into the local schools to give presentations on what Atos do as a company and to encourage them to take up careers in this industry. In addition, to this I was also put in charge of a group of students that came in on work experience, where myself and one of the graduates planned an exercise for them to build an app of there own - teaching them the basics of java. I really don't think I could have asked for more responsibility.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I received a lot of training that will benefit me in the long run. I attended multiple external training courses and a number of internal too. The training I have been given will help me with my final year project and the project skills I have learnt will most definitely benefit me in my future career prospects.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Provided you have attained the relevant performance ratings throughout the year and have good reviews from assignment managers, Atos seem keen to offer a place on their graduate scheme if you stay on the project/area you did your placement on or a different area if desired. They offer the incentive of sponsoring you during your final year at university to the effect of £500 per term (ie 3 terms)... if you are wanting to return and sponsorship is offered at the discretion of the service line and subject to continual assessment and the recommendation of the Placement Manager. The prospects within the organisation are excellent and there's an opportunity to carve your own career path. I have been offered the opportunity to come back however, I'm currently unsure where I want to take my career at this moment in time. Atos have been supportive of this allowing me time to weigh up my options.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There's a really good social scene with the interns/grads. I was the only intern at my location, however all of the grads on the graduate scheme have treated me as one of their own. There's been plenty of nights out and other social activities such as bowling with the office. The only thing I would suggest is that there should have been more of a opportunity for the intern community to interact with one another, as had there not been two trips organised to the London office the interns would have never spoken.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • This totally depends on where you are based. If you are lucky and based locally like I was, you will be able to commute from home and live with your parents! However, from what I've been told from the graduates that relocated here the cost of living is very cheap and there is plenty of bars and restaurants with offers on.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Its a small town but their was a good social life with the graduates and staff. The manager regularly arranged socials while me and the grads arranged our own nights out t blow some steam or for birthdays.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are a number of different activities outside of work, football being one, which i could have attended had I wanted to. There's plenty of opportunities to get involved with.
