    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The work was very enjoyable and represented the actual jobs i would be expected to do as an new starter. My colleagues were all very helpful and showed my a great deal of respect despite my disadvantage of not having any actuarial experience. The work colleagues made the placement both realistic, fun and very enjoyable, although the size of the office meant there were not as many socials as i would've hoped, but a perfect place to work nonetheless. No regrets whatsoever!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • All really welcoming and really understanding of individual abilities. I was not expected to be a genius, nor was i treated like a child. The level of guidance was just right to help me develop.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Guidance and support was given by management, but the main support and advice was provided by the people i worked with rather than management. Nonetheless, we were constantly updated with new resources available and ways to develop ourselves in addition to getting hands on experience.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Due to the size of the office, there were times where I had a lot of work and found it difficult to cope. But the majority of the time I felt the quantity of work was of the right level/too little.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility, but understandably I was not in charge of any client work. Intern project work however meant that I could take on a lot of responsibility.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Everything I learnt was of some use and I can see myself using the knowledge to apply myself more in understanding the theoretical side at University, and later on in life.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Unfortunately the size of the office and the number of people actually available meant the office was a bit quiet at times. This also meant that socials were difficult to organise due to a potential low turnout. However, everyone wants to have fun, so sometimes it was just a matter of taking a proactive role in trying to liven up the place and all of a sudden the 'fun never stopped'.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Everything went according to plan. All paperwork / logins / extra peripherals (such as a Key Fob to access emails from home) were ready from the first day of work! Unfortunately, project work was suspended temporarily due to waiting on HR to arrange to suitable equipment hire etc.

  • Both the company and colleagues took time out of their busy schedules to assist me and teach me new ideas and methods.

  • The organisation is amazing! The size of some offices however meant that some offices are more 'fun' than others.

  • Local pubs/bars in Birmingham were fairly cheap.

  • No nightlife experience during the internship, but from previous experience there are definitely some good clubs/pubs/bars

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Everyone was always eager to try something else! it was simply a case of someone taking charge and organising it.
