The Role
I have absolutely loved it. However I have found hearing about cancer quite emotionally draining at times, but I suppose that was inevitable.
I could see that, unlike other placements I have done, the work was genuinely necessary and they hadn't just made up something for me to do. The staff would always say 'thank you' and offer some extra advice for future reference, if needed.
The staff are very accessible and easy to talk to. I had weekly meetings with my co-coordinator who would make sure I was on top of my schedule and getting everything I wanted from the experience.
I always had work to do but enough time off to fit in tea breaks!
The right level. I could tell the staff trusted me enough to let me work independently but they were always on hand if I wanted to ask a question.
As well as learning about types of media, InDesign, blogging and accessible formats (which is appropriate for my interest in journalism), I have a much clearer understanding of the editing process. My eyes have really been opened to how charities work and made me even keener to explore them more.
The Company
It's office-based and everyone's busy doing their own work so it can get very quiet. However, the staff have organised a few lunches and you can tell they all enjoy and respect one another.
Very well organised but extremely flexible too.
The coordinator asked me what I wanted to learn about and then made sure I gained experience in it. They really did their best to use my existing skills and develop others.
Flexi Time
Working from home
I would love to come back here if anything became available :)
The Culture
The interns meet up regularly but my days rarely collide with theirs so I haven't seen them much!
It's as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be.
I've seen advertisements for staff yoga and Zumba classes which look really fun.
