    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The responsibility you are given means that you will face struggles because you're new. The key thing is to write as much down as possible in the first 2 weeks and find a graduate to answer all your silly questions.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The Tesco internship is great for doing something important rather than just filing. Everyone has a real project to work on, so your work is put into place, which means you're part of the company, not just an intern.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Everyone has a line manager, who is responsible for supporting you. Don't expect them to be available to you very often or particularly consistent in their feedback. Managers take on interns to upskill themselves so the support can be really lacking. This is especially found in teams that are store focused because your manager may be in store 3/4 days a week.

    2/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • VERY. Depending on your project, you can have ebbs and flows. You may have a week where you're just waiting for information or for a meeting with someone and you can't go forward until then. But most of the time you are very busy because the projects interns are given are quite chunky and they can be difficult to complete in 10 weeks.

    2/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A lot. Your are given a real project that could go live at the end of your internship. You can be rolling out changes for stores and affect the work of thousands of people. Or you could be making a little IT change that could save the business thousands of pounds or a lot more if it goes wrong.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • A lot of what you learn is Tesco specific, but it also gives you an insight into retail. Of course you also learn the generic skills that you would during any good internship scheme.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyone is friendly and helpful, although it can be very intimidating upon arrival. Tesco culture means that everyone should be able to contact anyone else to ask questions. it doesn't quite work this way, but you can book time in with senior people and they're willing to see you and talk about your work. Everyone at tesco is very happy to talk about themselves so it's easy to network or ask people's advice about something.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The scheme is well organised on the whole. The Early Careers Team, who organises the internship are really helpful. Unfortunately, they hand a lot of the day-to-day responsibility to individual HR departments, who are not so great. The HR department in Dotcom was pretty bad.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Tesco are very clear on what they want from you ask an intern. The internship can lead to a graduate scheme, which is where Tesco recruit people they consider to be their future leaders. Therefore they do everything they can to make sure you are developing to that standard. I was sent on training days with my team and to business planning meetings just like every other person in the office, so you're not thought of differently just because you're there for a short time.

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • At the end of your internship, you have a sign off meeting, which is where you present your project to management and HR and they decide whether to offer you a grad scheme. The internship is a good foot in the door to get on the grad scheme. The grad scheme is accelerated development and you are pretty much guaranteed (unless you do something really wrong) a Level 2 (manager) role at the end, if you make it to the end. Tesco are very confident in their recruitment process so they don't bring you in if they don't see that you have the potential to do great work for them.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We had socials within our departments. We also had dinner arranged for us to socialise with Directors, which is a great opportunity. There are also 3 event days spread across your internship when all the interns (about 60 or so) get together for development and socialising.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Pretty low, the Hertfordshire suburbs are much cheaper than London.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Depends where you live.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Tesco have a partnership with Diabetes UK so there's a lot of scope to get involved with charity work. There are also groups of graduates/interns who play football or cricket. So if you want to do something you can normally make it happen.
