    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Internships tasks are quite varied between different interns, even in the same discipline. I suppose that the enjoyment of the internship depends very much on the task(s) allocated. As for myself, I enjoyed the placement. BP is an easy place to work.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Valued, without being overbearing.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Again, this must depend significantly on the team and supervisor. Support and guidance through the recruitment process was exceptional. If I have one criticism, more feedback during the internship may be useful.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I enjoyed the pace of work, as well as the relative freedom to be left to get on with it (within schedule bounds), rather than being micromanaged.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The analysis resultant from my project contributed to conversations with government.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Exposure available to a range of programmes and people with especial expertise. At internship level, it is largely left to the intern to seek and utilise these, though I understand that the graduate scheme is more formally-structured with respect to skills and training.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I have not met anyone in BP who is unpleasant. The team with which I worked is focused on their work, but everyone is willing to take time away from their own work to tutor, or discuss an issue.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • HR do a great job with organising the internship.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Aside from the Induction Day, a presentation skills workship was the only formal training given, although on-the-job training and tutorials were provided within the team.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Company Car

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The recruitment process seems heavily front-loaded; relatively difficult to obtain an Internship but, once there, the prospects for obtaining future employment are very good.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Interns do not gather regularly, so it requires a determined effort on the part of the interns to organise events and persuade others to join.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • This depends on the location of the internship. I was based in Sunbury-on-Thames, but others are in Hull, Aberdeen etc. BP do provide location allowance for those living in or around London.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I am not interested in nightlife.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Activities available most weeks. BP has its own social club nearby.
