The Role
Internships tasks are quite varied between different interns, even in the same discipline. I suppose that the enjoyment of the internship depends very much on the task(s) allocated. As for myself, I enjoyed the placement. BP is an easy place to work.
Valued, without being overbearing.
Again, this must depend significantly on the team and supervisor. Support and guidance through the recruitment process was exceptional. If I have one criticism, more feedback during the internship may be useful.
I enjoyed the pace of work, as well as the relative freedom to be left to get on with it (within schedule bounds), rather than being micromanaged.
The analysis resultant from my project contributed to conversations with government.
Exposure available to a range of programmes and people with especial expertise. At internship level, it is largely left to the intern to seek and utilise these, though I understand that the graduate scheme is more formally-structured with respect to skills and training.
The Company
I have not met anyone in BP who is unpleasant. The team with which I worked is focused on their work, but everyone is willing to take time away from their own work to tutor, or discuss an issue.
HR do a great job with organising the internship.
Aside from the Induction Day, a presentation skills workship was the only formal training given, although on-the-job training and tutorials were provided within the team.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Car
Company Parties/Events
The recruitment process seems heavily front-loaded; relatively difficult to obtain an Internship but, once there, the prospects for obtaining future employment are very good.
The Culture
Interns do not gather regularly, so it requires a determined effort on the part of the interns to organise events and persuade others to join.
This depends on the location of the internship. I was based in Sunbury-on-Thames, but others are in Hull, Aberdeen etc. BP do provide location allowance for those living in or around London.
I am not interested in nightlife.
Activities available most weeks. BP has its own social club nearby.
