    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Really enjoyed the experience and the internship got better and better as time went on.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • At the start it was very slow but as I got more involved and made an impression I certainly felt that my work and presence was valued by my colleagues. On leaving was told that I would be missed on the desk.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager was very busy but when I really needed her she was there. Grads on the team were always available for support and guidance.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Work tended to come in big chunks so I would go a few hours without anything particular to do then get handed a load and would subsequently be crazy busy. Again worth mentioning that during first week was given very little to do but as I assumed more responsibility and credibility with the team they entrusted me with much more as time went on.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Surprisingly a lot. Had responsibility for a lot of pieces that went out to the clients themselves and certain accounts and data entry projects that required 100% attention to detail.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I came from a non-finance background but I feel that I could now talk about the markets and private banking for hours on end. We were given a week of training at the start which was highly useful and I learned so much just by keeping in touch with the markets and reading all the research pieces produced by the bank. I also attended various presentations by different teams and meetings by fund/hedge fund managers which all proved invaluable.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • We were easily one of the hardest working desks in the bank, starting at 730-745ish every day but there was a friendly atmosphere and a constant stream of banter down my end.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • HR were difficult at times but in general it was pretty well organised, although at the start I did wonder if they were even expecting an intern on that day.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Taking into account the training, the intern presentations and networking sessions and the social events organised I would say that they invested a lot of money into the programme.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Although not everyone raves about working at HSBC the grad programme seems very appealing.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Interns regularly socialised and I will definitely be keeping in touch with a lot of the guys.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Its London, but we were well paid so it wasn't such a problem.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I certainly made the most of my free time.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were opportunities to join sports clubs and bank social events which was plenty for 10 weeks.

    5/5
