    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my time at YouView. I was given tasks that I could feel were making a big difference to the team's workload and the experience will be immensely valuable as I look to start my career in PR. YouView is a company filled with ambitious and creative people and it was a great privilege to be a part of their team.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Right from the start of my internship I was treated like an integral member of the team. All of the staff at YouView were very welcoming and approachable and, where appropriate, my colleagues always invited me to meetings across the business and with external stakeholders and journalists. I was asked for my opinions which made me feel greatly respected. YouView has a fantastic, inclusive, culture and I will miss working there.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager and the other member of my team were really great at giving advice and sharing their experiences of the PR industry; they encouraged me to ask as many questions as possible and were open in sharing their suggestions about how I might be able to go about advancing my career. Between them they have a lot of really interesting experiences of PR activity and it opened my eyes to the enormous possibilities of PR. On a personal level, I had weekly one-to-ones with my manager which were invaluable for my personal development. She was always willing to help if I had a problem and suggested new working methods that I will definitely utilise in the future.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was never bored! There were so many things to get involved with and do and the tasks were always interesting. There were times when I felt slightly overwhelmed by the amount to do but my manager was very helpful in suggesting techniques to help manage my workload more effectively.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a significant amount of responsibility during my placement. From managing YouView's social media accounts to running the PR for the internship programme, I was always encouraged to come up with and implement my own ideas. In addition, I began to represent the PR team in daily operations meetings with teams across the company, which was fantastic for me as I was able to meet and form relationships with colleagues from a range of seniorities in teams across the company.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learnt so much throughout my time at YouView, not just about the broadcasting and PR industries but also about myself and the ways in which I work. I attended training to advance my abilities and picked up a great deal of information about PR best practice and how to interact effectively with different stakeholders. The skills and insights I gained at YouView will remain with me for a long time to come.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyone at YouView was so friendly and approachable; everyone was willing to talk to you about their roles and experiences which were really interesting to hear about. I will miss everyone who works there!

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I have had a few internships prior to YouView but none so greatly organised. HR were fantastic at keeping us informed with updates about developments within the company from when we signed our contracts until we started. We had extensive inductions to give us a broad overview of the company and even a tour of YouView's charity of the year, Coram.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • All of the interns had a training session to develop our interpersonal skills and help us make the most of our internship which was really useful. In addition, my team always invited me to training they were taking part in which developed my skills enormously in specific areas related to PR.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • As the PR team is still very small I am unsure as to what specific opportunities could be open to me. However, if I was able to go back, I would in a heartbeat! In addition, my colleagues introduced me to PR agencies, stakeholders and industry organisations to help me progress my career for which I am incredibly grateful. My experience at YouView has really enhanced my knowledge of the sector and given me a fantastic platform from which to start my career.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I had a really great time getting to know the other interns (there were 10 of us in total) and we went out for lunch together every day as well as for occasional drinks in the evenings.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • It's London so you can't expect anything too cheap! But there were some reasonably priced pubs and lunch venues close by which we enjoyed exploring!

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • It's London! There's something for everyone!

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There was so much to get involved with at YouView, from 5-a-side teams and running clubs to charity events and activities! As interns we were always encouraged to get involved and I especially enjoyed helping out at the company summer party.
