The Role

1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?

I did very much enjoy my job throughout the year. However there were points in the year where work thinned and I lost a little motivation until more came my way.

2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?

I feel as though they appreciated the help that I could give them, but as the placement is only one year they did not necessarily feel overly confident in my skills as there was not enought time for them to see what I could do.
2 /5

3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?

Not a lot - was difficult as I was based in central London as he is based in Scottland.

4. How busy were you on a daily basis?

This changed continously due to time of year.
4 /5

5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?

I was given different levels of responsibility from different collegues as some I dealt/worked with more often than others - this made them feel more relient upon what I could/couldn't do and cope with.

6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?

I found that this year didn't just help me with tangible skills but the greatest thing about this placement was that working in such alorge company - really changed me as a person for th better - I have become much more self confident and self relient along with being more willing to throw myself into unnown areas of business that would have, at one point, made me extremely uncomfortable.

The Company

7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?

Quiet, calm, motivated atmosphere.
3 /5

8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?

Well organised, however i think that more thought could be put into the 'change over' period at the beginning of the placement. In my case I didn't have one - and I started the placement quite nervously!

9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?

There were many online courses to take if we wanted, however, if I tried to complete one the system did not work

10. What were the perks on your work placement?

  • Flexi Time
  • National Travel
  • International Travel
  • Company Parties/Events
  • Working from home

11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?

I think the prospects are fantastic. Joining the Graduate scheme would be a great idea if you know for sure that this is the kind of thing you want to do. I feel as though I want to explore the possibilities out there before settling into a company like IBM

The Culture

12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?

yes, all the placement students from different locations got on extremely well and enjoyed each others company. The Feltham location is not that far either so was easy to meet others.
5 /5

13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?

More expensive than im used to at uni in Manchester, however I expected this in London. I lived in Clapham and had a really nice flat with two others from IBM. I knew placement students who were paying a lot more than me though!

14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?

Fantastic! IBM is right across Waterloo bridge...with Covent Garden, The Strand at your doorstep! and only about 20mins walk to trafalger square and Liecester Square.

15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
