    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?

    • Really fun and interesting. The best thing about RBC and I know this may sound cliche but its small. That means you can talk to absolutely everyone and that sort of freedom really allows you to get to know employees all over the bank.

    • Great. People are nice and friendly and mroe than willing to talk to you and help you through whatever you are doing.

    • A lot. If ever you needed help people were always there to land you a hand.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?

    • It varies. You have to understand that in 8 weeks, a team is not going to teach you to do a full day's worth of work for you to leave in a couple month's time. Its just too draining and inefficient. But what that means is that you get mini projects, and you get time to sit on other desks who will tell you what to do and perhaps give you work to do. All in all as long as you are determined to keep yourself busy, you will find work. Don't expect too many hand outs, the experience is whatever you make it out to be.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?

    • I was lucky because when I started doing the client valuations, although a lot of it is automated - really when you get to do something daily, you get to know what it is and how to do it. At the end of the day if those reports aren't sent out - its on your hands, you have to fix it. I love that about my role because it does make you feel like you are doing something of value.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?

    • The best thing I've definitely improved on is my use of excel. Excel is the SO IMPORTANT and really you only touch on the skills you need for excel during your academic life. Apart from that, until you've been working - it is always a daunting task talking to people of seniority. But this experience really teaches you to be comfortable and confident with to those senior than you. RBC makes it especially easy since everyone is so nice but although you may be inexperienced, if you feel that you have something of value to add - you should because everyone wants to hear valid and justified opinions.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?

    • A great mixture of an intense but comfortable environment to work in. If you're a person who wants to work quietly by yourself then a bank is not the place for you but if you're someone who enjoys a pacey work environment but at the same time a good level of banter, RBC is great for that.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?

    • Well organised but don't expect to be spoon fed work. Like I said previously the internship is what you make it out to be. The people who organise it present you with ample opportunity to build up your network so make sure you don't take it for granted.

    • The company invests a lot. You do get access to all the tools you need to do and understand what you're doing.
