The Role

Role Description

1 week insight

  1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  2. I was pleased to feel so welcome in the firm. All levels of staff seemed to take a genuine interest in me and my time there. Everyone spoke openly about the firm, allowing me to gain a real insight into what it would be like to work there.

  3. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  4. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. There was an impressive lack of perceivable hierarchy in the open-plan office.

  5. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  6. I was given a project, mini assignments and some real work to do. Everything was explained clearly by a current trainee and there was always someone I could turn to when I had questions.

  7. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  8. Some of the tasks tested my current skills and some developed new ones. The insight into the working practices of a law firm will be invaluable when relating academic work to real life scenarios.

  9. How well structured was the insight?
  10. I was paired with a current trainee who greeted me at the start and gave me guidance throughout the week. There were clear deadlines for the assignments and project, making it easy for me to plan my week.

  11. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  12. I was welcomed by the staff as though a member of the team. We were taken out for lunch and drinks with the trainees but I didn't feel the firm was trying too hard to show off, there was just a general atmosphere of fun and friendliness amoungst staff.

  13. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  14. We received personal feedback for our assignments and project from a member of the recruitment team.

  15. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  16. The assignments and project were quite time-consuming meaning there was less time available to do real work and understand what I would be doing on a day-to-day basis. However, where the trainee felt a task was appropriate, he would share with me what he was working on and give me some related tasks to contribute to the work of the firm.

  17. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  18. The atmosphere in the office stood out as friendly from the first day and it was clear that there was a strong rapport between all members of staff. Through my personal experience and hearing about the activities trainees were involved with I was able to get a good feel for the firm.

  19. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?

  20. 8/10

  21. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  22. I received a competitive rate

  23. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  24. We went out for lunch with trainees on the first and last day of the placement and went for drinks on one evening.

  25. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  26. It would have been nice to socialise with more members of staff but socialising with the trainees was a valuable opportunity.

  27. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  28. Everyone was always talking about past and future activities with the firm, showing how much they enjoyed them.

  29. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  30. It was great to see how a firm of this size opperates and to get a feel for the personality of the firm.

  31. In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
