    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was extremely interesting to be able to apply the knowledge I had gained from my university studies to real life problems.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was not working with many people of my own age group therefore there was not as much of a social aspect as I expected within the office. There were however regular sports meetings at lunch times where I had the opportunity to make new friends.

    3/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The help was always there if I needed it. All I had to do was ask.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There was always something to during my placement. If it felt like there wasn't anything to do it was easy enough to find something.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was in charge of my own project which I was solely responsible for delivering its goals. I even got to see the formulations I had been working on scaled-up to a pilot plant level from a lab-scale.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I received a valuable insight into how chemical engineering and research and development function in industry. I also gained a much greater understanding of things which I had learned at university.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Always something exciting happening.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well organised for me but a few had teething problems at the start.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was fully trained in relevant areas and was allowed to attend training events.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Financial Bonus

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would love to continue working at Unilever. I really like their business ethics and employees. I also thoroughly enjoyed playing a crucial part in a project which will contribute to products which will be sold on the shelves.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Due to where I was placed, there was only one other summer placement student. We shared a house and became friends but it would have been nice to have been involved with the larger social group based in London who I met at the induction day.

    1/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • After having lived in Glasgow, Bedford by comparison was quite expensive for socialising. It was however fairly cheap in comparison to London. The cost of living was reasonably average.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife in Bedford was ok. It was nothing special.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were loads of sports put on by Unilever. There was a different sport on every lunch time which anyone could get involved in. I played rugby every week and played in a tournament representing Unilever.

    4/5
