About You
There was a really nice atmosphere in the office. I learnt a lot in my two weeks there and everyone was really helpful in assuring I got the most out of my insight.
Everyone was really welcoming and very friendly; I was treated like every other worker there. The work I was doing was my own project for my learning development so was not valued in the sense that it contributed to their company.
They were always helping me, giving me tips and suggestions on how I could improve my work, and were happy to assist me whenever I asked for advice.
I picked up lots of tips in my design and presentation work which will be useful in university projects. They also helped me produce a collection portfolio which improved my understanding of how to present a collection, and will be useful to take to interviews in the future.
The Company
It was well structures. They planned things for me to do which would be interesting for me- set me a brief, showed me previous examples, gave me a tour of the studio and gallery, and a tour of the factory so I could understand the production process.
The studio was very relaxed, it was open plan so everyone could talk. The other workers were so friendly so I felt welcomed and at home straight away.
At times they put aside their own work to focus completely on my own project, giving me one to one guidance and help, and assuring I gained as much as possible from my fortnight with them.
I felt like I was part of the company and would like to work with them in a full time role. But as my project was for my own learning and development and not for the company, I feel it would be a bit different if I actually worked as a designer for them.
I understood the basic running of the company but there is far more I could have learnt about the company and job roles.
Everything Else
I gained a better understanding of the design process from my own design work, speaking to other workers and from watching them at work. It allowed me to see the different styles of design and decide which area I am most interested in working in.
There were plenty of opportunities to speak to other designers in the studio about their work but there wasn't any opportunities to meet other employees of the company who weren't in the design department.
There weren't any social events planned during the two weeks I spent with the company.
They were planning a social event for everyone one weekend for team building purposes and to get to know new starters, but this was for after I was due to leave my work experience.
I would definitely recommend this insight as it was such a nice place to work and I felt that I learnt so much in just two weeks. The other workers there were helpful and really had time for you, going out of their way to help.
