    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It's been fab. Got to do so much and reminded myself that I can do so much!

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • A really lovely bunch, very friendly and welcoming. It's a good thing to get your head down but when I realised I only had a couple of weeks left, I wished I'd made more lunch dates and spent more time getting to know everyone.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The editor whose job it was to take me under her wing did not take her duties lightly! She was incredible from day one-from taking me to lunch on my first day, ensuring we had a catch up at the beginning of each week. I was asked in my first week to write a list of skills I would like to develop and the editor reminded me of some of these in the final few weeks and gave me the opportunity to get stuck into projects that would require those skills.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was always busy but usually nicely so. The number of tasks I did increased as I became more familiar with the work, the team and my environment. During the second half of the internship, I helped to manage the organisation's LinkedIn group and was given a research project to work on by myself.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Sometimes, I was given extra responsibility to help other team members if they were really busy. Even during the rest of the time, I was producing work that had a deadline.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I will always be grateful that I developed the skills that I've always wanted to have a go at and in such a friendly and supportive environment. I hope to take all I've learnt in the editing world at macmillan such as, carrying out research, learning to use InDesign, audio proofing and producing video briefs, into a similar role in the future. I now also feel so much more confident applying for jobs.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was a really friendly environment and nobody minded to stop and have a chat but then it was quiet enough to get your work done which was great because I'm not good with distractions! Being a charity organisation, there was never a shortage of cake or nibbles:)

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Due to the editor being so organised, I felt really secure during my placement. She always had something lined up for me and helped me to prioritise my work load. It was obvious that many of the activities I undertook were planned for me which was really nice.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I always felt valued and was given good feedback. It felt like I was being trained up to do the job of editorial assistant within the team.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The opportunity to work with Macmillan Cancer Support in the editing team as I've been doing would be awesome. Here's hoping there will be a vacancy!

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The good thing was that you could involve yourself as much or as little as you wanted to. So, I enjoyed the odd pub lunch with the other interns, had some nice lunches with my colleagues and participated in some cheering action with my team at the London Marathon.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Lunch and travel were subsidised.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Hmm, I didn't really explore the nightlife and I'm not sure I would in the area where my internship took place. However, if it was in the West end of London, it might of been a different story.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were quite a few things to do. Some of the interns were always arranging something like pub quizzes and lunches and cheering at the London marathon with my colleagues was good fun.

    3/5
