    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my placement. I am very keen to learn more about Public Health and Policy and this role was the perfect way for me to gain some experience in this area. I have gained so much from this internship and that is because my manager was determined to make sure I got the most out of it. An extra bonus- I have been able to network and some very lovely people.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Extremely, as Local Influencing is a new team I felt that the work that I was doing was really well valued and being used. My manager is very enthusiastic about the work she does and is always really grateful for the work I do for the team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given a lot of support and guidance through my internship, from my team and my mentor. My manager especially has been amazing. They have all been there if I needed help with the projects I was working on and personal documents such as job applications, CV's and cover letters for future roles.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I had the perfect amount of work, I like having lots of work to do as it keeps me busy and so am not able to get bored. In order to not be overwhelmed we set realistic deadlines from which my manager was able to understand how I work and vice-versa. I am generally quite organised and therefore am relativley good at prioritising. My manager would also stress which task is more important so this was helpful for me too.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I have been able to get on with my work with little supervision which is how I like to work. My manager is always welcoming so if I need any help I just turn to her. If there has been anything that required a lot of responsibility then she would always make sure I was okay and usually have the team assistant and hand to help me whenever I needed it.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I definitely learnt a lot and gained many valuable skills that I will be able to transfer to future jobs. I had the opportunity to create a personal development plan which stated the skills and different experiences I wanted to gain from the internship. My manager helped me to achieve this in any way she could as well as develop many other skills I hadn't thought of. I was also fortunate enough to have a mentor who also assisted with this.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere is great, everyone gets along great and the wider team are all very close. Everyone is also very welcoming and so its a great place to come into. There are always cakes and freebies that get everyone excited which is nice. When their are 'Hit the Floor' meetings- everyone gathers on the work floor to listen to a talk so theres always something happening. Being in the Policy and Infornation directorate there are times when the office is very quiet but this just means everyone is working hard.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Brilliant, everything was already set up for me to start and everything was ready for me tie up lose ends before I left.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Again I had a personal development plan which my manager and mentor did lots on to help me achieve the things I listed. They set up inductions with teams I was interested in, set me work that would enable to improve my organisational and communication skills. Also provided me with tools and documents that could help me develop my knowledge around Public Health.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Company Parties/Events

    Healthcare/Dental

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very good, many people who intern here come back to work after a few years. Some interns were fortunate enough to get jobs while they were interning here, my team on teh other hand are still relatively new so they wont be recruiting for a while and so it would be a lot harder for me but thats why networking can be so important.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, the interns get a long great! Lots of us tend to have lunch together and sometimes we organise after work drinks/ dinner.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I don't live in London so I commute from home which can be very expensive but CRUK pay for your expenses (travel and food). Food wise the canteen is very cheap and very tasty and there are so many restaurants and places to eat in angel so isn't too bad cost wise.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There are lost of restaurants and bars around the area. It is also very quirky so is a great place to go out in.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, there were roadshows, cancer awareness talks and events to take part in. Also the interns generally try to fundraise while they are here, for instance there was a pub quiz night- therefore gets everyone out of the office and having some fun. There are also lots of team lunches and dinners, especially if you have to travel to Manchester or Newcastle.
