The Role
Thoroughly enjoyed every moment on UmPhafa, you always felt you were contributing to conservation hands on and really saw the difference being made.
I always felt that the staff at UmPhafa really appreciated our help, and the researchers who were there also valued our help immensely.
We were all briefed about each task we had to do to ensure we were comfortable doing so.
I was there during their winter, so days started at 8am and finished aout 4/5pm with a lunch break. I felt that the days had an ideal about of work, since it was very hands on.
We usually needed help at the beginning either from staff or other interns to get the hang of things, then after we did jobs ourselves, but there was always staff with us, especially when were in the bush.
The skills I have developed at UmPhafa will be incredibly useful for jobs after university as it gave me the hands on experience that I did not get during my degree.
The Company
We all got on well, and all contributed to the work we were required to do, from our tasks during the day to cooking in the evening!
Fantastic, very easy to organise and all emails were replied to quickly whilst organising the placement.
We had a training day on the first day we arrived to ensure we knew how to act when in the bush, and were always trained on how to use any equipment.
I would absolutely love to work in a Private Nature Reserve after my time spent with UmPhafa, and ideally get a job there!
The Culture
We always had a braai on a saturday night, and had a few drinking nights when we were there, so a great social scene.
There is a great bar that we went to one night in the local town, obviously there's not much else!
There was always opportunities to do acitivies on our weekends off, we went to the Drakensberg mountains and a weekend away at Zingela Safaris to mention a couple.
