    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Role threw up many different and varied challenges to face every day. No two days felt the same.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Despite being an intern, I was very quickly accepted as part of the team and given a level of responsibility that reflected this.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I felt I was able to approach my mentor and manager to resolve any issues. When I needed help they were always on hand to support me.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This varied, some days I was rushed off my feet while others felt a little slower. On balance though, there was more than enough work for me to do.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Without interns GE Aviation would cease to function as a business. Interns are given a lot of responsibility, but also a lot of support so you are never left feeling overwhelmed.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Learned good time management and effective prioritisation skills, as well as technical knowledge and report writing. Learned how to communicate effectively.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Generally friendly, most team members were up for a laugh however fully focused when required.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Some computer access issues initially but overall reasonably smooth.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Taught the basics of lean six sigma and encouraged to practice giving presentations. Some more training would have been nice.

  • Hard to say at this stage, however it appears that there are roles available for top performers.

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • A lot of the interns are up for social activities outside of work.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Cardiff is a fairly cheap city to live in.

  • Could be better for a capital city, but more than enough to satisfy most.

  • Endless opportunities to volunteer and make a difference in the local community.
