    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I had a very good experience with the company. After being introduced to everyone I would be working with and given inductions on relevant technical aspects of the job, I was given a main project to complete which was both challenging and rewarding.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was treated very professionally over the course of the internship. I felt that from day one my opinions were valued and listened to, despite working with others with far more experience. I was encouraged to join in with social events run by the people I was working with.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • In the beginning, I was given a lot of support and guidance in order to fully understand the technical aspects of my work. After this initial phase, I had weekly informal catch-ups with my supervisor to assess my progress and talk about any issues.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I worked on one main project throughout the course of my internship. This kept me busy throughout each day, during which I would be performing a variety of tasks and collaborating with other employees and interns.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility with my project. I had deadlines throughout the internship for various phases but I always felt that I was trusted to meet these and organise how I would progress to the next phase.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I gained a huge number of skills which I would not otherwise have gained within my university course, but will be incredibly useful in a career after I graduate. These are mainly coding skills, but also learning how projects are managed within large engineering companies.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office itself was quite professional and quiet, but I never felt anxious to talk to anyone or ask questions. However, there were social events organised by people working in the office which were fun and a good opportunity to talk to people I was working with in a more relaxed environment.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very well organised from day one. Everything seemed to run smoothly during my time there and each week all interns were given the opportunity to attend talks given by a specific department within the company.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The people I was working with always seemed to be free to explain various technical aspects of the work to me and were very helpful when doing so. I was actively encouraged to develop new skills I learned during the course of the internship.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I really enjoyed my time with the company and could see myself working in a similar role in the future. At the end of the internship, I was given a lot of information and guidance on how I could progress with the company to a full-time working role in the future and the various different paths to do so.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • All of the other interns were very friendly, with year-long and summer interns meeting regularly for lunch and social events during our time there. I went out a few times with the other interns over the summer which was great fun.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived in quite an expensive area but found that I still had enough money to socialise and meet up with people on the weekends. In hindsight, I probably could have found somewhere cheaper to live during the internship.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife was pretty good, there were a few bars and clubs and I lived really close to them. The downside was that they were quite expensive but still had a lot of good nights out with the other interns.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Employees within the office organised social events outside of working hours which I was always involved in. All of the interns also regularly met up on the weekends and the evenings, including bar nights and rounders in the park.
