The Role
Location was good and the facilities were average. My computer that I was assigned to was running Windows XP so I ended up bringing in my laptop for work. The project was interesting and the freedom to make my own hours was useful but overall I felt I could have done something more exciting.
I was put in a research lab with mostly doctorate students. There were two other interns who were the other side of the room so I was largely sitting by myself.
Both supervisors were friendly and encouraging
Tasks and deadlines were set every so often but they were complete quickly.
Working on a large research project I never expected to be given tons of responsibility but everything was overseen by a supervisor and the final report was largely edited so I felt I only contributed one or two things.
I have just started a PhD so the insight was useful into a day to day life of a research student.
The Company
There was one social event however I was away for graduation. No one really talked to me and I felt like I was a ghost at some points.
Took a while to get an access card to the building and all the paperwork completed but the supervisors were helpful and pay was
Nada. A few brief meetings and a load of paper work to read through.
Working from home
Possibly, but their research is in a different area to what I am interested in.
The Culture
Nothing. The other two interns who were seemingly friends (and living together) never bothered to communicate with me.
There was no socialising over the summer and I stayed with extended family so the cost was low. There are a good range of hostels and campus accommodation available for the summer however.
Dublin City is fantastic for night-life, it's just a 20 minute bus journey away.
Nothing at the research centre, but this was only a 8 week placement so I wasn't expecting there too.
