The Role
Whilst I enjoyed my placement and learnt a lot from it, it showed me that the area I was working in was not for me in terms of a long term career.
Once I had started to obtain results from my work, I was consulted on where the project should proceed next and issues with certain areas. I felt that my work was of value to the team, and they made sure that I was kept in the loop in the same was as memebers of the team that had worked there for years.
Placement supervisor made sure that I had work to do at all times and would always find something for me to do if I asked. I was given a lot of freedom in the way I approached problems, but could always count on help and advice where needed.
I felt at times that I could do more work - but due to the nature of the work I was completing, this was inevitable at times (running complex simulations etc.). Good hours and very flexible with when they were worked.
I was directly responsible for investigating an area of the system being developed. My work had impact on the final product.
Learnt to program using MATLAB and have gained truly valuable experience of working in an industrial environment
The Company
Really relaxed atmosphere in the office, with everybody coming across as being friendly. No issues with going for a tea break or chat, so long as work was completed to a high standard and on time.
No issues.
I felt that with the number of interns on the scheme that a lot more could have been done in terms of showing us the broader picture of the business - I wanted to see what other elements within BAE Systems did but there was no opportunity for this.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Depending on the rating achieved in the end of intership review, steps can be skipped in the application process to the GDF or FLDP - where top rated interns can go straight through to the assessment centre stage on applying.
The Culture
Amongst the interns where I was based we organised a few nights out/cinema trips and socials
Not sure as I commuted in from home, however being a university city I can't imagine costs being outrageous.
Based in Bristol so effectively all nightlife opportunities were available that you can think of.
Had an interns vs. graduates rounders game early on in the placement which was a nice icebreaker. Flexitime allowed me to arrange my hours such that I would leave work at 12 on a friday to go climbing.
