The Role
The internship was very good overall. The other employees were welcoming, interns are given plenty of responsibility and freedom to explore their own ideas, while having access to expert advice and support when requested. Working hours are flexible (though one needs to be on site during certain core hours) allowing plenty of time to socialise with the other interns/industrial placement students as well as the BAE staff.
My colleagues at the Advanced Technology Centre were always friendly, willing to help and seemed pleased with my work.
Most of the other employees in the office did not have experience in the specific area I was working in, so the amount of help they could give was limited. However, they made an effort to help if asked and were ready to provide advice.
My project involved mainly independent, open-ended work, so I was always busy and could find more to do.
I was very much responsible for my own project and free to take it in the direction of my choice. BAE Systems tend to treat interns very similarly to full-time staff; self-motivation is key as there will be no-one looking constantly over your shoulder.
The experience of working within a large company is very useful. Much of my work involved programming software development, a key skill for people working in science, engineering, financial modelling etc. Summer interns were also invited to weekly seminars on different parts of the business. These were often interesting (at least to me) and offered an insight into the various technologies developed in the Defence Sector.
The Company
Friendly, but generally fairly quiet as people focused on their work.
Clearly structured, with weekly catch-up meetings with your manager, a mid-placement review and a final placement review.
My project involved a lot of self-teaching, however my colleagues were happy to explain unfamiliar concepts or help with hardware.
Flexi Time
National Travel
Seems like a great company to work for.
The Culture
Yes, usually something happened at least once a week among the interns.
Cheaper than London, though being fairly close to it, Chelmsford was not that much cheaper in general.
Very little nightlife in Chelmsford.
People organised football games, squash, golf, bowling and regular trips to the pub on Friday lunchtimes.
