    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I absolutely loved it. The information I'd learned on my course at university directly related to the work I was doing each day on my placement. This was beneficial as I never felt out of my depth and found it easy to slot right into the working environment. Also because I wasn't struggling with my classes I found it easy to relax and enjoy the working experience.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Every single one of my work colleagues was fantastic. They were all so friendly and welcoming. From the first day I felt like a part of the team. By making me feel so comfortable, I was able to produce great classes which some of my colleagues told me were the best they'd ever been involved in. Therefore, I felt incredibly valued by my colleagues.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had a meeting with the manager every Friday after the visitors leaving that week had departed. In these meetings we discussed how I felt I was progressing and any problems I had encountered. Such frequent meetings as these allowed me to feel that the manager was completely supportive of me and my efforts.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There was one exercising class and sports event each morning and afternoon of the week. These usually lasted for around one hour. These events were very busy and were extremely hardwork as we had to make sure each child was both safe and enjoying themselves. However once these classes had finished we had a few hours before the next one, allowing us to recuperate.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was holding various sports classes for both adults and children. I was allowed to take complete control of the aqua-aerobic classes as they were directly linked to what I was studying on my university course. I had a lot of responsibility during these sessions.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • They were essential to me gaining a good classification in my degree. For the first two years of my course I was producing work of an average quality, however after returning for my final year I was achieving grades a whole classification higher than previously. I believe this was a result of my immense development on my placement. The experience was incredibly beneficial.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • For the majority of the working hours we had holidayers to entertain, therefore the atmosphere was very lively and fun-centred. We didn't want the children, especially, to become bored and restless on their holidays, so we put a huge emphasis on making sure the environment was a fun one for them.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • There was a lot of different stages to go through before I could begin my placement. The longest was the CRB check which took over a month to complete. However the company were very quick and efficient at arraging interviews and assessments. If I hadn't needed the CRB check it would have been a lot quicker.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company worked in direct communciation with my university and allowed my tutors to come and assess a number of my classes. Therefore, they definitely invested in my academic career. Also, I was given extensive training on how to deal with the holidayers and any problems that may arise. Furthermore, the fact that they let me front my own classes perfectly shows the extent in which they invested in me. They put so much faith in me by allowing me to be directly responsible for their customer's enjoyment. If I'd produced a terrible class, then that would reflected badly on the organisation.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Above 25 days holiday

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Unfortunately, for me, the company had no available vacancies when I finished my degree. I would have loved to work there permanently as the eight months I spent there on my placement were some of the most enjoyable months of my life. As the company treats their employees so well, there is intense competition for any jobs that arise.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Each night there was a party until the early hours in the club house. After one o'clock in the morning the staff were allowed to relieve themselves of their work duties and enjoy the night together. We could purchase alcohol and dance on the dancefloor with the holidayers who were still in the clubhouse. As the members of staff were primarily under twenty-five years old, everybody could relate to each other and get on in harmony.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The Shaldon area is genereally quite expensive. It's not really a place for students. Luckily for me, my parents live in Teignmouth which is a short ferry ride away so I could live at home and travel to the holiday park everyday. The property prices are extremely expensive and are most probably out of any student's price range.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There were very few bars in the area, but the club house more than made up for that. The DJ's played very recent music and the drinks were cheap as chips. Unfortunately, however, the club house is not open to locals - only holidayers and staff.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I did so many activites with my colleagues. Nearly every week there was something arranged for the weekend. As all the staff got on so well, there were no qualms about organising and inviting people to social events.
