The Role
An excellent 'hands on' placement which has developed many transferable managerial skills. Placement has aided the decision to enter the world of supply chain in future years with great prospects with Gist in future. The structure of the scheme to gain operational experience in both warehouse and transport environments in a great bonus.
Quickly formed relationships with managers at all levels that went out their way often to value your work, which developed as the placement progresses
Support was there when required, especially from some very experinced team managers. Also the HR support was excellent throughout
Work volume fluctuated weekly and seasonally. Peak periods (especially Christmas) were very busy and long days/weeks but during standard times of the year the work load was excellent. Gave you the opportunity to develop and increase responsibility
From the first couple of weeks (post general induction) there was plenty of responsibility and this was well supported with experienced managers available. Responsibility grew during the year with occasions of running the shift.
Skills which I developed over the year will heavily assist in future job opportunities. Also until you go back to university to complete a final year do you realise the little advantages such as willingness to get up that little bit earlier and the commitment to completing work
The Company
Atmosphere changed across different departments and in accordance with who you worked alongside; but generally it was a fun atmosphere
Centrally the scheme is very well organised but you get the impression the organisation at site level differs giving varied levels of exposure and responsibility to placements at different sites.
The company invested in developing personal skills through supported responsibility and feedback was useful on an informal basis but also through management performance reviews
Subsidised Canteen
National Travel
Financial Bonus
If you put in the commitment throughout the placement year and show your potential then this can be recognised allowing opportunities of joining the graduate scheme
The Culture
Socialised well with fellow placement student but apart from that there was no social scene
Lived in a nearby university city meaning cheaper living is possible
Lived in a nearby university city where the nightlife was great
Occasional charity events. The guys 'on the shop floor' did offer the opportunity to join their 5-a-side team but nothing company organised
