The Role
The job involved working and managing in 3 departments, Transport, Warehouse and Admin of which I enjoyed all three. Overall a great experience and if you are someone who doesn't want to sit at a desk this could be for you. The job is hard work and there is shift work including nights, which can be difficult to adapt to.
As I got more experience I feel I was valued more.
Could be more in terms of training but they were all friendly and helpful when I had problems.
Always really busy, the fast placed nature of logistics means you always have something to do, something new to learn it is non stop and a good work ethic is required.
Was given responsibility to manage a number of areas in the operation including the European distribution.
More life experience than skills for my degree. Learning to manage people is the biggest skill I can take from the year.
The Company
Often in the warehouse you are hardly in the office, more working with the warehouse staff to get the job done. Otherwise in other departments a good atmosphere but everyone is so busy that it's work non stop really.
Well organised had specific dates to move departments, but its up to you really to organise the moves.
Could have been more training, however all training is on the job and its kind of up to you, if you want to learn you will pick things up quickly, but you need to ask questions a lot and use the workers experience to your advantage.
Financial Bonus
I have been verbally offered the chance to come back on the graduate management trainee scheme, which shows that if you work hard and do well there is definite potential for a career afterwards.
The Culture
Wasn't the most social of work places really, suppose as it can be longish hours at times people just want to get home. Unlike some placements there is likely only to be yourself as and IP and maybe one or two graduates. Towards the end I did get a bit more sociable with a few of the managers.
I stayed in Canterbury which was quite expensive to live. I paid £375 a month for a room in a house share which was as cheap as I could find. Socialising was not too bad.
Canterbury where I lived was not bad to go out in. Faversham however where I worked is not the best town for night life pretty dead.
I played football for a local team in Canterbury and a graduate I worked with joined a badminton club. Suppose its the same as anywhere you will find stuff to do if you look.
