The Role
Having a major passion for the brand before starting definitely helped - and the people I was surrounded by on a day-to-day basis were a great bunch!
Full marks on this one, my supervisor was more of a friend than a boss. A huge positive was being the conversation with the different members of the team, very much unlike the traditional workplace!
Personally I don't think I could have asked for a better manager, in terms of his knowledge and teaching abilities they were brilliant but because of being at that level he was often away from his desk/in meetings. Other controllers would be able to help in his absence though.
Early on in the placement I was worried I would not have much work to fill the time but as the year got on I was more trusted and received more work from my manager.
This was entirely dependent on how capable I was at my core monthly tasks. Luckily, I was seen as capable and this meant I was given a fair amount of responsibility, taking control of creating my own reports and leading meetings throughout my placement.
I would say the skills I developed are much more business based which will put me in great stead for grad opportunities.
The Company
Absolutely no question about this - loved the office!
It was well organised to a certain extent, there are a certain amount of core tasks that were taught in the handover period but anything extra was just taught as I went along with no real structure.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
I think I would have a good chance of a future job as I feel I impressed enough in my placement, the only thing stopping me is the location of the office being so far from home.
The Culture
Unfortunately have to mark this down, there are only 4 placement students and a handful of grads which makes it hard. Also, given the office is not in the centre of a major town and everyone drives to work it's hard to go for drinks after work.
Stockport is a cheap enough area to live in but the salary paid is representative of that. Was in a house with another student placement paying £260 a month exc bills.
Nightlife was good in central Manchester but that was a 20 min train journey from the office.
As the office has it's own CrossFit gym I was able to get involved with that and we had the chance too compete in a couple of competitions. There was also football on Tuesday nights after work all paid for by the company.
