The Role
A great experience. I had the chance to see all different aspects of underwriting and had some of my own responisbilities. A few bits of repetitve every day work, but understandable as I have no qualifications.
Great team! Everyone was supportive and there to help. Went on networking events with the grads and felt part of the team in the different departments that I worked in. The all respected me and wanted me to develop.
Everyone was extremely supportive- I had one-to-one talks and tutorials and someone was always there to help and answer my questions.
I had a mixture of my own work and responisbilties and shadowing people from other grads to managers.
As much responsibility as possible without having taken any insurance exams/prior training. I analysed polices for claims experience reports, adjusted policies and calculated premiums.
If I go into insurance I have had an invaluable insight- I have been on surveys, seen how reinsurance works, been on broker visitng and been to credit management. I have also learn how to navigate my way around the systems and the basics of premium calculation and renewals.
The Company
Some departments quieter/more buzz than others
I was given a diary at the start with different things I would do/achieve throughout the placement. However, I could tailor the placement to what I liked- I arranged additional broker visits; days at other offices and networking events which the team helped me arrange.
For grads they pay for your exams and give you study days. As an intern they will teach you how to do various things and always be there to answer questions
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
Not sure yet but I had an interview for another branch for the grad scheme and have been offered a job within my current branch.
The Culture
I was the only intern but there was a grad at my branch- however she was away for a bit of it. I had the chance to go to London on a networking event. It is ultimatly how much effort you put into it and which branch that you are placed in.
I commuted from home so it was petrol and parking. We occasionally went to the pub but generally the area (southampton) is not too expensive.
I didn't go out in the area I worked in- I went to london a couple of times. However, I know that it is good for students (I just lived far away and wanted to get home).
Most of the people at work had families so apart from the Summer party and another supper out toward the end (which were both great fun) there were not many extra activities outside work. I didnt take part but people at work are involved in a fantasy football game.
