    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The work I did and the team I was around could not have been better and the work was extremely interesting although it helps if you are already interested in cars like I am.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • From Day 1 I was made to feel welcomed and built a good rapport with my colleagues. I never once felt like a placement student but more a valued, permanent member of the team.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I have a lot of time for my line manager and the other members of my team, they were fully supportive and put a lot of faith and trust in me which was great. For a few months the department was without a 'Head of' which caused some short-term instability but this was more than rectified by the final quarter of my placement.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • At times things were manic, especially when my team was light on numbers but I enjoyed the frantic pace at which the business moved and I never once felt bored or had nothing to do.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • More than I had expected. From the first week I was working on projects in which the business had invested millions of pounds. My proudest moment was managing the shoot of the 2013 R8 'Evolution/Revolution' television commercial where I was the only member of staff from Audi on set. Huge responsibility was put in my hands which made me feel so valued and I learnt so much from that one day alone.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • VWG have their own internal training sessions which are adequate but my line manager ensured I went on 2 ISBA training courses which are invaluable for me trying to break into the advertising industry. It quickly became apparent to me that most brands will only send real established employees on these courses so I was incredibly fortunate.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • A good balance between humorous and hard working. Near enough everyone in the office had a sense of humour and the general make up of the team was friendly with everyone seemingly getting on well and working towards a common goal.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • As I mentioned, it didn't feel like a placement. There were no set 'placement' duties to do and all personal objectives were set in the structure to that of any other employee. The brand always made time for my University duties throughout the year and my only small criticism I have is that a senior member of the HR department could of had a quarterly or 6 monthly review with me.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As mentioned before, I went on ISBA courses that cost hundreds of pounds a time and my team were more than happy for me to spend insightful time with the creative and media agencies.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    Company Car

    National Travel

    International Travel

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    Above 25 days holiday

    Working from home

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The graduate scheme would be the natural step on but just because I have done a placement does not guarantee me a place on the grad scheme although a few people from the placement year before me have got jobs back at VWG. I guess I'll be able to elaborate on this question in 12 months time!

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, there is around 25 students across VWG all in the same boat of not knowing anyone when you move there. Like any social situation you had smaller groups splitting off but in general, there was a good core of us who were social and saw a lot of each other.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Not student prices unfortunately. Average I would say is £4 a pint and £400 pcm to rent a room. You have to remember Milton Keynes is an area with no University and full of young families with fast train links to London. The wage I received meant I could live well within my means but it was cheaper at Uni!

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Average. There are some good restaurants and bars but a lack of clubbing options. And be prepared to get a taxi anywhere you go, you can walk for miles in Milton Keynes and not get anywhere! If you are really struggling though, you can be in the West End of London in 45 minutes.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yep - I played in a work football team and there many social meets going on. Nothing is handed on a plate so you have to ask around but you can keep yourself busy indeed. I was in London at agencies around once a week and there's always lots to do there after work if you want to.
