Insight/Open Day Review

Overall, I really enjoyed the insight day at DLA Piper. I had previously attended open days at magic circle law firms so it was a nice change to be able to experience what it was like at a regional law firm. They also had a good structure throughout the day.

Although it was only a day, everyone at the firm was really friendly and were really willing to answer any questions. or to just talk to us. There was plenty of opportunity to network.

HR and graduate recruitment were pretty good. I had an enquiry about the insight day the week before, and they were really quick to get back to me. They were very supportive throughout the whole day, and very friendly.

The insight day was actually very beneficial in helping me to decide whether or not in the future I would be better suited to working in a regional office in the UK or in a large international firm. It was also useful in allowing me to see what aspects of the law I may like to go into.

It was very well structured, and similar to other law insight or open days. We had a few workshops about the firm, what DLA Piper expects from candidates, as well as a chance to network with the lawyers at the firm.

The students who attended the insight day were all really friendly, as well as the employees at the firm. Everyone got along well.

The firm didn't as it was only a one day thing. But they were very encouraging, and persuaded us to apply to the firm in the next academic year for vacation schemes and training contracts.

As mentioned before, the workshops were useful in allowing me to see what DLA Piper was like a firm, in comparison to other law firms. It was also useful in helping me to understand the kind of work I might be doing if I were successful enough to get a vacation scheme or training contract with the firm.

The general atmosphere during the day was welcoming, and this was largely down to the people who worked at the firm. The general culture at the firm was supportive and friendly.

It helped to decide, as mentioned previously, what kind of firm I would like to apply to, in particular whether I would like to work in a regional office or an international firm. It also helped to see part of the law I may go into.

They paid for the train tickets, as well as providing lunch.

Yes, there was a chance to network throughout the whole day. In particular there was a question and answer part of the day where we could directly get to know the lawyers present and ask them any questions. We also met a few lawyers during the workshops, and ate with them over lunch.

They were good, the lawyers were willing to talk to us and answer questions throughout the day, and quite a few email addresses were exchanged. There were no social events as it was only for a day.

They let us know other activities lawyers get involved with at the firm, for example, pro bono, and just generally getting involved with the local community. It seemed that these activities, especially pro bono, was in fact expected of employees.

Yes, it was very useful. However, it was quite similar to a lot of other law open days too, so you wouldn't miss out on that much if you didn't get to go to the one at DLA Piper.
