    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Everyone at the company gets on really well, it is a great social environment. We often socialise outside of work as friends, or with the company on nights out, weekends away or meals with customers.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • One of the best things about working here is the close team relationship, everyone's opinion is valued and taken into consideration.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The job begins with a 2-3 months training period, then rolls out into on the job training, again, everyone is really helpful and keen to share knowledge and best practices. Many of the people I learnt from had been placement students here themselves in the past. The amount I learnt on my placement is phenomenal, it really stood me in good stead for my final year of university.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was never bored, I was constantly working on a stream of project and support work. We tend to work long hours, but that is because time flies and the work is interesting. The workload is big, but manageable and there is plenty of support from everyone.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The responsibility level slowly increased as the year progressed. I (and other placement students) were trusted with a lot of responsibility, but like all things you have to work for it. The first few months are more learning and guidance months, then as you progress you get more responsibility.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • In my second year I failed a third of my modules and got an average of 54%. After 15 months at Lighthouse I managed to get a First Class Honours degree in Computer Science from university and when I retook the exams I failed I got the second highest mark in the module for 12 years. My lecturers said I wouldn't be able to do it, but I did. At Lighthouse you learn to be technically able, how to improve communication and most importantly you learn how to work and the benefits of putting effort in. Simply put I would not have the degree I have now without my placement.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • As a team we are very hard-working and dedicated, but we also have a lot of fun. Every Friday after work we go to the pub (paid for). We go for meals with customers or new employees (paid for). We often go on nights out together socially at weekends and Lighthouse always pay for a Christmas party, and often a mid-year celebration of hard work. Morale in the office is high and everyone gets on like a group of friends, I was made to feel very welcome, as were the other placement students.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • There was an initial training period, then out into the office and out to customer sites as part of the team. Some of the training material initially was a bit slow, but that is because everyone starts with different knowledge levels.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I feel like I was invested in. I was put on projects where I could travel and see new places (Germany, Italy, Spain). People were always available to help me progress, answer questions and teach me. We had a 2 month training program to begin with which really brought me up to speed, although that was only the tip of the iceberg of knowledge to acquire.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    International Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I have been working here since I finished uni. A high percentage of graduate recruitment comes from the placement year.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I think I now probably see my work friends more than my home friends (and I live locally). We all get on really well and are really happy to have new people come along and join in. The summer months when everyone is settling into there placement normally involves a lot of nights out.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Well, this is the south of England, so prices are medium I would say. Higher than university, but much less pricey than London and other expensive places. Prices are in line with wages and I have never heard of a placement student seriously struggling with prices.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife very locally is good and we go out locally frequently, but we are a 20 minute train away from Brighton and a 30 minute train away from London so there is plenty to do! Several people actually live down in Brighton also, so that is an option.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Pub on Fridays. Nights out. Weekends away. Sports. Work has a 5 aside football team that play every Monday. We could always do more though, so feel free to suggest some activities if you join :).
