    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have very much enjoyed getting into the 'world of work'. It has allowed me to see theory learned at university, in practice. I have developed numerous skills, and all in all value my placement experience extremely highly. I have experienced an extremely varied year of work, which has been excellent for my development of human resources skills.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I have enjoyed working at all levels of staff within the company. Within the HR function I felt an extremely valued member of the team, and not like a ‘placement student’ may expect to feel. I built many great relationships within the team, and now have friends for life...

    3/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My supervisor whilst on placement, was extremely supportive during my time at ConocoPhillips. Communication was excellent, and support/help available whenever I needed.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My workload whilst on placement was fairly constant, but as with any job (I believe) has some days busier than others. In general, a steady amount of work daily. No boredom/time with nothing to do, and no real pressures/too much work.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I enjoyed having responsibility whilst on placement. I was trusted to work on confidential information, as required in a Human Resources position. I was responsible for working the Staffing Technology and working with daily queries without assistance, unless necessary. Also, when working the whole re-organization, I was given a lot of responsibility. I valued this, as it made me feel a valued member of the team.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have been able to see theory in practice; I was able to identify many theories etc being applied whilst at work. This is why I rate the placement experience so highly. The skills I have received and generally being in the working environment has exposed me and prepared me for the future. Extremely valuable!

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • An extremely friendly group, therefore a great atmosphere in the office. Lots of fun and support, without interfering with work!

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • In general, very well organized - what I got was what I expected (if not better). Although some things are obviously quite difficult to anticipate, hence certain aspects of the job were not pre-identified. E.g. re-organization exercise, staffing reduction exercise

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • ConocoPhillips ensured that I was trained up for the new Staffing Technology which came into place within the first couple of months of me starting, as I ended up being a key user of the technology. I was also able to take part in training for SAP, as I needed this for part of my role – setting up purchase orders, and handling invoices for the HR department. Other training was available if I needed it.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would very much value the opportunity to work at ConocoPhillips in the future. If there was a graduate scheme available within my area of study, I would definitely be applying for the job for when I graduate from university next year.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social side between fellow placement students was really good actually. We participated in many activities together, hence became quite good friends. This provided us with work mates of similar ages to socialize with also.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Quite standard really. Aberdeen is quite an expensive city to live in though! I already live here, so nothing really changed for me.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Fairly good night life!

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Many activities/sports clubs available to get involved with.

    4/5
