    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The work was very interesting and, although challenging at times, ultimately very rewarding.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Although I was only on my internship for three months, my colleagues treated me with the utmost respect, and I was given equal responsibility for work. I feel that working alongside the team helped me improve on my communication and social skills, and made my time at Shell very enjoyable.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had focal points that I could contact from Human Resources, should I encounter any problems. On the occassions that I did contact these people there were extremely helpful and always eager to ensure that I was completely happy with their solutions. I could have used more help in arranging transports an accommodation for my stay.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The work I was given allowed me to work at my own pace over the duration of my internship. There were deadlines for parts of the work along the way, which ensured that I was kept on target, but I also had flexibility in the way in which I approached the work, allowing for a very good balance daily.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given almost complete responsibilty for the work I was doing, whilst knowing that if I had any questions or problems my supervisor or other colleagues would step in and quite willingly help me out. I was not given work that was "unimportant" - I was working on real life projects so could see the implications of what I was doing, in a very positive way.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I developed strong programming skills, that I have no doubt will be extremely useful in my following education and my work life subsequent to that. I also improved my communication skills, through many different mediums. I learnt how to deal with customers through email, office communicator, on the phone and face to face. Working within the team enhanced my social and communication skills even further, as I observed and practiced how to fit into a team structure, and to be a successful team member.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • My office colleagues were lovely, and were always eager to chat with me and share their experiences. I feel like I have made good friends with my office companions. Also within the team, within the same corridor, were other colleagues who I got the opportunity to interact with at lunch and other occassions. Everyone I met was genuinly friendly and helpful, and I met such a broad variety of people that there wa never a dull moment!

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I was monitored during my time at Shell, and whilst I was given much independence, I was comfortable knowing that the support was there should I need it. I was always given plenty to do, but it was made sure that this was not too much to cope with.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I undertook much safety training, including a morning of fire training. I also participated in several online training courses regarding confidentiality and business principles.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would definitely consider working for Shell after I have completed my PhD. Part of my internship here involved a presentation and assessment, and through that I have an open job offer for when I graduate, provided there are opportunities at the time. This is a wonderful thing to know that I can utilise, and I would be proud to work for this company in the future.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I was part of a young professionals social group, within which I attended events such as evenings out and meals. I also attended a team BBQ, which was also attended by team colleagues from Amsterdam; this provided a lovely opportunity to meet colleagues from other locations, and to spent time with outside of the office with colleagues.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • During my placement I lived with some family friends, so I did not experience Chester in the expected manner for an intern. However, there is plenty to do in the area, being close to Chester, Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village, and also close to Liverpool. I found plenty to occupy my time here, at a reasonable price.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I believe the nightlife was good, although I did not have much opportunity to experience it due to time restrictions. I very much enjoyed everything I saw.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I did not have much time for extra activities, but I know of colleagues who attended Salsa lessons.

    3/5
