    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I worked from home and about the Glasgow City Centre. This internship was perfect for me as I do not have access to a car are were able to work from home as well as going to local Wi-Fi cafes to connect to Coffee Morning hosts who were raising vital funds for a great cause. I enjoyed the internship fully and I recommend it to everyone I meet.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I had the flexibility to work 3 to 5 days a week and was contacted by my mentor each morning and evening. Also if I had any problems she was always a phone call away. Also for the first 2 weeks I shadowed my manager to get a feel for the job and was also able to get to know the West of Scotland Team. In addition I met up with her at least once a week to catch up and make sure I was on track with creating a buzz for Coffee Morning. I am positive I will keep in touch with the entire team. (Great bunch)

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager gave me amazing support and made sure that I was always supported and well equipped. For example doing calls to Coffee Morning hosts in front of me and then let me try a few myself, thus I was experienced and after the first I had the confidence to thank hosts and make sure they are well supported from Macmillan. Also I had contact with my Area Manager who was there for me if I ever had a question or query. In addition Macmillan also allocated me a mentor, who was in my area of interest (challenge events.) She was a great asset to Macmillan making sure that my internship was going well and that I was gaining as much experience as I could by telling me all about her job and what the day to day tasks were.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Most days were varied and busy. The time flew since in the morning I would check emails, do what was needed. Then maybe make up the newsletter that was then emailed to all Coffee Morning hosts. In the afternoon I would then meet up with my manager then go to see a top host to then support them in the panning of their event. Once I was home I would either check emails again or do some donor calls to Coffee Morning hosts. However another day could be us going to schools to do school talks then going around in Muggie (The mascot of Coffee Morning) Then go meet a Provost and having a photo with them.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The responsibility I was given was just right. My manager and I decided on my focus each week and it was up to me how I would arrange my dairy since it fitted into my part time job. I was able to contact to hosts, email MP’s and send out press releases. However I always double checked them with my manager (just for a second pair of eyes over them.) Also I in charge of the twitter and facebook page of the local page, this was my masterpiece and I still try to keep it up to date.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My manager gave my superb support and made sure that the tasks were what I was wanting out of the internship; such as I was interested in gaining more experience in Media and the contacting the Coffee Morning hosts. This is why my workload was specific to focus I had chosen, I am very grateful for that. This experience has been invaluable for my degree (events management) and future jobs as I would love to go into the fundraising industry. This has been a sounds and broad learning curve, that I have loved and I have loved every moment of it.

  • Well since it was a remote job we did not have an office but I can imagine the fun that would come out of that office.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship has just had its first year of being remote working and I found it to be very well run with some very small hick-ups. We were issued an intern founder that had everything we would.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • At the start and end of the internship we were flown down to the main offices in London, which we all loved and this was to meet our fellow interns. This was great to meet them and know of their successes over the last 3 months. Also we set up a facebook page during the internship for questions and answers between us.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Well I live near Glasgow and I’m a poor student the cost of living is just the same before the internship. Also for the internship we were supplied with Blackberries to do donor calls and connect us with the company portal which was invaluable to working from home and keeping my costs done. As this is a voluntary internship I was not out of pocket since my expenses were covered such as train fares and lunches while I worked (up to £5)
