The Role
I have learned a lot in terms of the organisation itself, working in an office, managing my projects, learning about the department and how it works, developing personal skills, and working in London. It has been even more enjoyable as my colleagues were very helpful and I got to know the interns very well.
My work was directly used by colleagues.
Weekly 1-2-1s, 2 week review, mid-internship review with my mentor was really helpful as I had the chance to review my internship and my projects on a regularly basis.
Depends on the day but essentially all projects are down to me to manage.
I was given enough responsibilies but not burdened with them. My mentor was always available to help me if I needed it.
The internship was only very closely related to my degree - biomedical engineering - from the fact that it was related to public health. However, I have gained some project management skills which will be useful in any situation in the future when managing projects. Also, it has given me insight into working in a large organisation and for a charity, which I've always wanted to do.
The Company
Bubbly colleagues and always something going on, e.g. cake time.
Well-planned out internship scheme with overall interns-only training and projects, as well as individual projects from mentors. Very satisfactory. Felt like I was contributing something towards the organisation.
Very pleased with the personal development aspect with this internship. My mentor reviewed my goals every week in our 1-2-1 meetings and followed them up. For example, I have learned Photoshop from scratch and have completed projects using it. Also, I have learned about project management and have completed a PID for my other project.
The Culture
A group of us go to lunch together and occasionally go for a drink/dinner after work.
London is very expensive but we go for places that were reasonably priced when going for dinner/drinks.
I would only go to the gym or meet a friend for coffee/early dinner on weekdays as it gets tiring but weekends usually spent out and about.
