    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I absolutely love my job here at M&G. I'm getting my hands dirty on different projects from different departments and gaining as much experience in asset management. Everyday I get to learn something new which I think is very good for my professional development.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Colleagues are very friendly and approachable. They are calm and complacent and don’t mind answering few of my silly questions (like excel, sometimes when I get stuck). We crack jokes, laugh and work in a friendly environment. Their advice and feedback on different project has helped me to finish my tasks efficiently. I have made a couple of friends in other departments in M&G and prudential .They are very warm and welcoming, always asks me to approach them if I have any questions. Overall I can say, I’m working with the A-Team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I really like their approach of assigning a buddy (graduate) to every intern, as it’s much easier to approach someone of your level because you don’t hesitate in asking questions. I have been assigned to a senior financial analyst as well who I think is very proficient in his job and as a mentor. My desk is just next to the head of the team and my supervisor, so help is always available at 10 feet! ïŠ Supervisors at M&G are good at communicating ideas and skills to new people, they don’t spoon feed me (which I think is good) but at the same time they make sure I get enough guidance to complete the task. I get to attend almost all the meetings where I’m involved in the important decisions and issues of the department.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Recently I have been very busy as I have been assigned three tasks from three different departments, (as I chose to get maximum benefit from the internship). I’m working with the operations risks team and an Actuary along with the supervisor from my team. In my first week I was introduced to different people and I was given the opportunity to involve with other departments. I think I have got a golden chance to learn about operation risks, distribution finance and indexes through different projects. Normally in other firms you get restricted to only one kind of work or department and you don’t often get to rotate across different departments in a span of 3 months. So I think M&G is good at structuring the work placements.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • My work is considered valuable. I often help my supervisors to prepare reports and P&L statements which are presented to the directors. Successful completion of tasks and a good feedback gives a boost to my confidence and helps me to be more efficient and responsible in the team.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • M&G helped me to develop expertise in actuarial, operations risks and accountancy at the same time without “information overloading!” I have an IT background and I’m working in finance, so M&G is preparing me an ideal candidate for the job market. I was also given some assignments which will help me in some of my FIA (Actuarial exams). Hats off! to M&G

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • People at M&G are generally friendly and happy. They coordinate with each other very well and talk a lot during the breaks and the social events.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • All my weeks at M&G have been well structured. Every Monday I have a meeting at 9 with my supervisor s to discuss schedule for the whole week. During the meeting I get to discuss the different aspects of the task and often I’m asked if I would like to do anything in particular.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I find it as a bespoke training program where all I have to do is communicate to manager if I would like to try something new. In my first week I was sent to a one day investment management training program with other interns, which was fun. In the end of the program we all played a game where we had to act as fund managers and manage client’s assets. I was also trained on Hyperion systems which will be an add-on to my CV. There are more surprises coming up!

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I have kept my fingers crossed and hoping for something good to come up after the completion of this internship. I have been told that interns are put on fast track applications for next year graduate program. A good salary, great team to work with, excellent exposure to the asset management industry, so I find it very attractive. I will definitely choose M&G over others.as I find this environment conducive to me.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We all hangout from time to time and grab lunch together in the canteen once in a week. There are students from different countries , so I enjoy being in a multi-cultural group.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I work near Bank; it’s not too far from where I live and its easy to commute to, so it’s ok. Bars and pubs are not too expensive; M&G has its own canteen which I find less expensive than Tesco (plus fresh food!).Other eating joints are at the walking distance and you can always go to the borough market for the street food! ïŠ.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • It’s an office area, so you won’t find many clubs but west-end and Shoreditch are only 15 minutes on the tube. There are some really good pubs just across the road (on Canon Street and King William street) where you can have a beer and enjoy a good laugh with your colleagues on Fridays.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I often get invitations to play golf, paint ball or watch footy with graduates and people from other department.
