    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I did expect more challanging task. So far I have learnt only one new technology, so I do not expand my skills a lot. What is really nice, however, is the atmosphere in the team, they are really easy-going and happy at work. I don't leave office in bad humour which I do appreciate, there is plenty of time to talk about stuff not connected with work, so I think there is some balance.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The work I have done so far met with great acclaim from my nanager. Colleagues started to ask me what I think about their ideas, which make me feel really proud. I think my skills are really good and that helped me to impress them so that now I can really feel like a part of the team. We also share quite a few common interests, so we can really spend hours chatting about this and that.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • It is hard to say. I don't have many questions because as I mentioned earlier I don't do many new things. The introduction I was given was quite good, so now I don't need to ask many questions about how something works or how to do something, however I was given a few nice ideas which I haven't known earlier, so the support really exists and everybody is happy to help.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It is not bad. I am not bored because of no tasks and not too busy so that have to stay extra hours in the office. I am however bored with few tasks I was given, so the work is not really gripping as I would expect it to be. I think I work effectively 60% of the work day, I don't need to work more, because I am really ahead of the schedule having done some extra stuff.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The specific of the work I am doing is rather binary, either you can do everything or not. One of my tasks was quite important and it will really affect the environment, it was simple though. Moreover, it will be highly supervised, so I can't tell I had to spend hours on testing and making sure it works fine.

    2/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Most of the skills I am using now I got to know earlier. The skills I have learnt during internship are really specific and would affect my future career if I chose to work in the investment bank, which so far I don't expect it would happen. It was nice to get to know how the infrastructure works, but as it is not completely developed at my workplace, but rather vendor I am not that interested in it, because I can't ask folks from the team about the history of creating such huge software.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Olympics. That explains everything. Just you can imagine, everybody enjoying the sports, watching it, sharing thoughts, amazing.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • We were given really nice introduction to the Investment Banking. People with huge experience and those who really matters in the Bank delivered well prepared speeches to us. That really showed what the bank does and why it needs so many new people. During the internship we had a few more meetings were directors addressed such matters like origin of the crisis, future perspective and what will be the role of UBS in next few years. They really wanted to share it with us, so I felt like I really got some special knowledge that not everyone is allowed to get. I feel special about it.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We did have great meeting with high performance psychologist who was talking about key things that help people achieve their greatest goals. That was great and I will really use this knowledge in future to develop my career. Also we were granted access to some special materials which I keenly browse every other evening. The knowledge there is really specific to the economy which I am interested in.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I think I performed well, we will see...

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yeah, we were going out every Friday, there were few events organised by UBS to establish some links between us. The atmosphere was good, however, I could feel tense. Lots of people in other divisions seem to be rivals, I don't enjoy that...

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London is expensive, especially during olympics. But it was managable.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Massive crowds in front of pubs, you can't feel bored, and you can't miss it. The nightlife was really cool and that is the reason I would love to visit London again.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were quite a few, we have got some events for interns, but I think the real opportunities that UBS offers are great when you are on full-time job there.
