The Role
i did enjoy the placement and learned a lot, however i think the whole group struggled in attempting to achieve a balance between being an irritating intern and being interested. it was hard to be tasked with 'observing' for the first five weeks or so and not adding any value.
due to the nature of the sector, and the team i was in, i was unable to add any value within the team and struggled to interact closely due to the busy nature of the work they were all doing.
support was generally good, when managers/team were not too busy.
ranged significantly between having very little to do and having too much to do, but that's not a reflection on the placement rather a reflection on the market and the nature of this sector.
very little responsibility is possible in a role like this. i did stock pitches which were sometimes put on and research for team members.
i have learned enormously about the functioning of the markets both in FICC and equities. this will be hugely helpful for the rest of my degree and for future jobs if I choose to work in the sector.
The Company
Of the financial sector, UBS is one of the best to work for. This comes from talking to housemates/colleagues who have experienced other banks and often have very negative comments towards them.
The Culture
the social scene was only what we made it. minimal input from the company compared to other internships where weekly events were organised and funded.
expensive - its London.
good but only because I knew people and places outside of work.
No, very limited during the summer internship as would be expected.
