    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • As an experience this was quite invaluable for me. As it is very tough at times you can look back and say - I did it. The positive thing about this placement is at the same time its biggest challenge: You will take on responsibilty at an early stage. The working times can be quite tough throughout you sales module: Early mornings, late nights, and weekend shifts are not unusual. Later on in the placement working times become more regular. There were times were I really enjoyed the placement, seeing that I made real progress and got intensive experience and an extensive insight into the business. On the other hand it was quite tough at times, after all you will be mainly working in a deep discounting environment.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Throughout Most of the modules I got on pretty well with my colleagues and line managers. Of course there will always be people that wont be your 'best friend', but overall I always got on well and felt comfortable.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The placement is well structured and layed out, however throughout my logistics module I sometimes was not always guided enough to know what I should be doing. There were days were I was just sitting and waiting for my shift to end and go home. I often had to do work where I didnt get anything valuable out of. Nonetheles the placement is fairly well supervised and monitored, though there could be more support on a regional level. In strores and the property module I always felt fully supported by colleagues and my managers.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Mostly I had to adopt a hands on approach to my work which is perfectly fine as long as im learning. That was the case most of the time, sometimes though I could have just stayed at home. In sales you will always be busy - guarenteed! In the other module s it depends on your line manager and the enthiusasm you have.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • In terms of taking on responsibilty I think this placement offers you all you can ask for. The sooner you are ready, the sooner youll be responsible for runing a store on your shift, or being responsible to manage warehouse pick-shifts, delegating your staff etc...

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I got more confident twith this placement which of course will always be of help and i had a full throttle introduction to the proffessional working environment. Also I got an extensive insight into how the company works and a good understanding of retail and deep discounting. This was a good compelement to the acadameic approach towards business at university.
