    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have had a brilliant time at Linklaters - every aspect of the vacation scheme has been thoroughly enjoyable- from the work, to meering the lawyers, to the lunches. Of course, a vacation scheme at Linklaters requires hard work - but there have been so many socials every week so it certainly isn't an "all work, no play" environment. Everyone is incredibly friendly and loves to have a good time! The scheme has been an excellent insight into the life of a City lawyer. The range of work has been interesting and varied and I can definitely see myself working here in the future.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • One of the best things about Linklaters is that students are given a warm a genuine reception into the firm. At no point was I treated differently because I was a vaction scheme student. This was reflected in the responsibilities I was given and the work I was asked to do. Linklaters would not be the hugely successful firm that it is were it not for the people that make it such a great environment to work in.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I spent time in two departments at Linklaters and both times my principals have been fantastic. They have always been around to answer questions, give advice and offer their help with any work. In addition to my principal, I had my trainee buddy and the graduate recruitment team who were happy to solve any queries also.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There have been some slower days but even then, there is always someone to make sure you have something to be doing. I never felt like I had too much free time because there were workshops/presentations to attend a few times each week and a vacation scheme project to complete. All in all, the balance was good. I was definitely not overworked but there was always something to be done and something interesting to learn.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • During my time at Linklaters, I was given varying levels of responsibility. Inevitably, there were times when I was doing more administrative tasks but these occassions were few and far between. Most of the time, I was really pleased with the responsibility I was entrusted with. It was great to see something I had been working on sent to a client; or to sit in on a conference call in which research that I had done was being discussed.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Linklaters vacation scheme was not only useful for teaching me about the firm, I also learned an incredible amount about myself, my abilities, and things that I need to work on. Over the past month I have become more confident, more commercially aware, and better able to work under pressure to tight deadlines. At the start of the scheme, I was nervous about being given "real" work to do and I was certain that I wouldn't be able to grasp the legal and commercial concepts involved; but actually, I was able to logically and systematically work through things and complete all tasks efficiently. Towards the end of the scheme, I felt much more confident in my own abilities and was ready to face the challenges before me.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It is no secret that lawyers work hard. But this is made a little easier with the friendly atmosphere in the office.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was apparent that a lot of hard work and thought went into organising the internship. Workshops and talks were well thought-out and interesting and the social events were always excellent.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The firm organised many workshops and lectures to help with our personal and professional development. Students have the chance to sit in two departments (nearly always their top choices) in order that they can experience the areas that they are interested in finding out about.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Undertaking a vacation scheme with the firm fast tracks you to a training contract interview. As long as one works hard and wants it enough, job prospects are very high.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Everyone on the vacation scheme (about 25-30 students) got on very well straight away. There was a mix of students from so many different universities so most people didn't know anybody when they started. We started threads of emails discussing our social plans from the first day and if there was a day where something wasn't already on our timetable, we'd explore the local area and go out most nights.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I live in London so I was lucky in that I didn't have to rent accommodation. I know that university halls are available at a reasonable price and Linklaters salary helps to pay for this. Food was very reasonably priced as Linklaters' restaurant food is subsidised. Most of the social events were organised and paid for by the firm so we spent a relatively small amount of money.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Linklaters office is in Moorgate - close to Liverpool St and Angel. There is always something going on in the City and the nightlife was never dull. The office is just a few minutes walk from Moorgate Station so transport to other parts of London was very easy.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Linklaters gives vacation scheme students every opportunity to get involved with sports teams, clubs, religious forums and more. The gym and gym classes were available to us and proved to be particularly popular.
