Overview
I've been involved with a wide variety of tasks on the East West Rail project, which aims to provide a link between Oxford and Cambridge via train. This has ranged from working on a number of Information Management and Data Management processes. I've been integral in the development and maintenance of both the Task Information Delivery Plan, which communicates >1000 deliverables to our client on a monthly basis.
Skills
I've made progress in several areas, including Digital Capability (data analytics, data management, Microsoft Excel), collaboration, personal development, project delivery, and sustainability. My involvement in the East West Rail project has significantly enhanced my understanding of the engineering industry.
Responsibilities
I've been given a lot of responsibility in my placement, being able to take ownership of numerous tasks. Recently over the past few months, I've played a key part in the submittal of a key client deliverable, overseeing the project from conception all the way to presenting the finished product.
Support & Guidance
From the start, the onboarding process was smooth with clear detailed instructions provided to help me settle into my role. My line manager was always available to offer valuable feedback, which helped me improve my work and develop professionally. My line manager and wider team have been incredibly supportive, not only in providing thorough training and helping me settle into my role but also in encouraging me to explore new areas and develop my skills beyond my core responsibilities.
Culture
The company culture was incredibly welcoming and supportive. From the very beginning, everyone was extremely friendly and approachable, creating an atmosphere where I felt comfortable asking questions and seeking guidance. The team fostered a strong sense of collaboration, with colleagues always willing to help and share their insights.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement, as it provided me with a valuable and enriching experience. I had the opportunity to work alongside a friendly and supportive team, which made the environment engaging and enjoyable. Throughout my time, I learned a great deal—not only about my specific role but also about the industry and workplace dynamics. The hands-on experience allowed me to develop new skills, gain confidence, and grow both personally and professionally.
Yes
My biggest piece of advice would be to embrace your personality and let it shine throughout the application process. The company values authenticity and a collaborative approach, so don’t hesitate to express who you are—your passions, interests, and unique perspectives. During interviews and assessments, confidence and enthusiasm go a long way.
