Overview
As a mechanical engineer in the water division, I have assisted in sizing and selecting all the mechanical equipment required at clean water and sewerage treatment works. This mainly involves pumps but also includes penstocks, valves air blowers, etc. This requires a lot of calculations, schedules and drawings to be produced. To do this, I work within a multidisciplinary team (electrical, civil, process) and we regularly have meetings.
Skills
I have developed a lot of existing skills building on from Uni, including hydraulic calculations of pumps and pipelines, and report writing. Some new skills I have developed include working on Process and Instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) from a technical side but also working with an international engineering team where most communication is via Teams calls and emails.
Responsibilities
I was responsible for carrying out a lot of calculations and completing documents. I was responsible for my own time and only had to meet the wider team deadlines..
Support & Guidance
Everyone I met in the office and online was always happy to offer support or when they were busy would point me in the direction of someone else who could offer guidance.
Culture
The general atmosphere was very friendly, everyone seemed to get on very well. Everyone seems generally interested in engineering and making a difference.
Your Impressions
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on placement and have had a great experience of what working life as an engineer can be.
