Overview
On the first day, we had an insight into the firm as a whole - including the culture, the differing teams and the initiatives. The second day entailed the shadowing of a trainee solicitor; students were assigned an individual trainee to shadow, aiding them in carrying out their tasks for the upcoming week.
Skills
Certainly - I developed my understanding of Cloud Computing, researching and gathering data concerning the recent developments in this area of Digital Business, as well as its impact on the legal industry, as a whole. Further, I enhanced my knowledge surrounding upcoming online regulations, aiming to regulate social media content, especially in regards to minors. Thus, through this experience my legal knowledge was enhanced, as well as my critical analysis and reflective capabilities.
Business Insight
It was great! The Early Careers Team dedicated a session to informing us of the opportunities available to us at the firm, not only at the moment, but in the future. Further, shadowing a trainee in the Digital Business department definitely allowed for the expanding of knowledge concerning the business. I was able to gain an insight into the new technological advancements that are impacting the legal industry.
Culture
Extremely friendly! I had the exciting opportunity to network with lawyers at all levels within the division in which I shadowed, this included partners, trainees and associates. They were all extremely friendly and made a conscious effort to speak to me a the only intern within their department. Regarding the firm as a whole, there was a friendly environment, where it is evident that there are strong friendships amongst colleagues, no matter their role in the firm.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed the scheme massively. The Early Careers Team created a welcoming environment, where all students received a balance of understanding the day-to-day activities carried out at the firm, as well as experiencing the firm culture. Therefore, the two day experience certainly immersed us into the Simmons & Simmons workplace environment and culture, on all fronts.
Yes
Immerse yourself into the opportunity! The scheme is set up well, you are able to form new connections, whilst ganging an understanding of the workplace and so the only limiting factor would be not taking full advantage of the experience. Speak to the HR team, the lawyers and the other students; they are all friendly and always happy to discuss anything - whether it be their work, studies or personal life. Overall, you never know who you may meet.
