    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my 12 month industrial placement at Cummins. I have been very impressed with the level of responsibility and self management work I have been given. This has made my placement feel like a permanent job and gave me a great team effort feeling.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The responsibility and self managing work I have been given is the same as that of the permanent colleagues, this led me to feel very valuable within the team and across corresponding departments.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Support and guidance has been great from my supervisor and manager. They have always been on hand and made availability to discuss any problems I may have had. My supervisor always gave me great advice on my engineering career path and valuable trade knowledge.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I have been fairly busy on my placement year for Cummins, I self managed projects and picked up more work as and when I completed current projects. The type of projects allowed me to structure my work and organise my time thus allowing me not to get swamped with too much work at any one time.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • My level of responsibility was much much more than I had anticipated (a good thing), as I was a little worried that I was going to be a glorified tea boy. This was far from the case, I was given the same responsibility as that of the permanent engineer employees. I had to visit suppliers, complete purchases, fit prototype parts etc. This responsibility has given me a fantastic wide range knowledgeable experience.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have been so impressed with how much I have learnt in the real world of working in my engineering placement with Cummins, I have learnt more in one year than I have in my three years at university. This is because of the wide range of work and training Cummins have supplied me with, i now feel much more knowledgeable and confident for my final year at university.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in my office was very nice and friendly. I am able to chat to colleagues casually regarding work and social life. Everybody was easily approachable and always willing to help.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The overall placement was well organised, I had a two week cross over period with the previous placement student when I started, which greatly helped me get to know some colleagues and was great to get settled in at the work place. I have had a lot of training and involvement with the community with Cummins which has been a bonus.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I have attended a lot of training which has vastly improved my knowledge in the engineering trade. I have also had a mentor to monitor my quarter reports for ImechE accreditation, and to discuss any problems or request I may have.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, there was 18 placement students at my Cummins branch and we regularly got together outside of work for social events, we also did social events for the whole of engineering department such as meals and karting.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived at home with my parents during my placement year :-) but the other students were pretty happy with the cost of living in the location.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Daventry is pretty small, and I only popped out when we had social events organised, as for the students that lived locally, they said it was ok.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I mainly just got involved in events that me and the other placements students organised, consisting of karting, meals and visiting places.
