    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • This role involves working under the supervision of experienced actuaries and being able to contribute to various tasks within client teams that help you to gain practical experience in the field. You will be involved in a mix for client and technical work, as well as having a project over the course of the internship, with a final presentation in your last week.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have developed my technical skills in excel and company actuarial software whilst doing calculations here. My understanding of actuarial concepts has greatly improved over my 8 weeks also. Critical thinking skills have been important when evaluating how to approach different tasks and managing/balancing the workload. Presenting my final project was challenging but invaluable experience. Hymans staff are really friendly so I have spoken to new people across the business almost every day here.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given plenty of responsibility during the internship. Work was not forced onto me, but offered so I could take as much as I felt was suitable. I was also encouraged to work alongside my allocated client teams and so I felt I was working with other people, not for them.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I was given frequent reassurance throughout my internship, any member of staff I worked with was supportive of me asking lots of questions and always made time for me which made me feel really valued. Whenever I was given a new task, someone would talk me through it so that I was able to easily learn new skills and take notes on what they were explaining.
