    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • - My role gave me a very good insight of what is going on in the insurance industry and how qualified actuaries make pricing decisions based on relevant information - People are professional yet friendly. The opportunities of learning from them and occasionally being challenged by them are very valuable.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • - The senior people in my team are very accessible. - My opinions are always valued and questions very well answered. - Team members share their personal life in a very relaxing manner.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • - Both my managers are very helpful in answering my questions. - My first manager was very patient answering my "silly" questions over and over again. - Both managers generously provide trainings on technical skills and general industrial knowledge - Even close the end of my placement when my job was to pass my experience to other members, my second manager still spared time to teach me VBA. The example given was very classic. - It would be better if there was a well established starters' pack with compresensible product information and useful tips from previous placement students

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Jobs are well delegated. I can always plan my schedule at least one week ahead.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • - The work I am doing affect our pricing decisions quite directly. - I have the chance to communicate with other departments independently on certain issues. - Even though I am not involved in the high level decision making. My managers are always happy to explain the reasonableness of every decision.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • - I learned my Excel and Access skills almost from scratch! - The experience makes me treasure my final year in uni a lot more and gives me a much better idea on which are the areas I should focus on more - I feel I have become more mature and am appreciating the resources available to me a lot more

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • - People are fun to talk to! - Very often, we catch up with each other in the morning on what each does the previous day.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • - The placement started with some induction sessions and the work has been 'road tested' by previous placements - My pace of progress is well managed - There are two thorough performance reviews in the middle and at the end of the placement

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • - In the fornightly one-to-one's, my manager gives me his comments on my overal behaviour. Areas that need to improve on are pinpointed in a professional way. - There are compulsory online trainings about security information, treating customers fairly, etc.

    4/5

  • A very good company for actuarial students - generous exam support and friendly atmosphere

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • - Some of us are good friends. - There is a better social scene among the actuarial students who are permanent employees. I have had quite a few road trips, dinners and night-outs with them.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Cheaper than London where my university is. But as a placement student, my budget is still tight since I have to save for my final year in uni.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There are some happenings, though not very creative.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • You are always welcomed to play sports or join various leisure activities (movies, dinners, road trips) with colleagues. I am even comfortable organising travelling or eating events among actuarial students.
