    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role is split into Talent Acquisition and Learning and Development. I have the opportunity to take complete creative freedom with larger projects. Therefore, time during the day is allocated to maximise impact of these independent projects. On a day-to-day basis I will support the rest of the HR team to maintain the high quality talent management system at JDE to maximise potential of associates. This is consistently varied in terms of exact responsibility but may include assigning training and tracking as such, communications, creating and collecting surveys, diversity, equality and inclusivity initiatives and student charity. My daily interactions are cross-sectional at JDE, networking with people from all business units.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have learnt a multitude of new skills at JDE thus far. Firstly, I have gained wider insight into what HR looks like out of a textbook and in real life, observing each function and the role it has in maintaining the high quality of talent at JDE. During my placement so far, I have heightened both my personal and professional skills. As an intern, you are supported to develop new skills in your own way. I expressed a desire to develop my creative skills, therefore I have been assigned projects of that nature such as a novel engagement project. Plus, I have learnt a variety of new skills in professionalism, data-handling such as using excel, learning and development programmes and survey programmes. As my role continues, I know there will be many more in both on-the-job learning and external training opportunities.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • As an intern, you are given a high level of autonomy and responsibility. I have been given the opportunity to 'own' projects. This means having my own control and taking steps to make sure this is complete to a high standard, independently. The tasks I have been assigned are meaningful and I see how I am impacting organisation. I can see my place within the talent team and how I make an individual contribution.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • To begin the placement, on the first week you are supported by the previous intern which is extremely helpful and eases the anxiety of starting a new internship. There are clear support networks. My line manager arranges catch up meetings with me on a weekly basis but there is always the opportunity to connect with anyone from the team for extra support. Each team members has been kind and patient with me in the induction process.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture is unique in that every individual is appreciated for their own strengths. The use of psychometric personality profiles at JDE creates a common language for all associates where individuality is embraced and each member of the team is valued for different reasons. There are consistent initiatives for diversity and equality where differences are celebrated. As an intern, you take part in student charity where all interns come together with a common cause to raise money for selected charities of student choice. During my time I have observed JDE's social responsibility remit put into action which creates a feel-good atmosphere around the office. Everyone is friendly and always up for a coffee chat!

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • Thus far, I have enjoyed my internship to a great extent. My expectations have been met and exceeded. As an intern I expected to have less responsibility and have a large amount of admin-based work to complete. I was pleasantly surprised to see the level of autonomy and creative freedom I have had in owning projects. Plus, I have been given the opportunity to travel to different sites for various events. For example, getting a tour around the factory to explore the journey of coffee and see a different perspective of the business than the office. Plus there is a great level of flexibility in terms of hybrid working, dependent on your own working preference.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Jacobs Douwe Egberts
  • If you show passion for the role you are applying to throughout the interview process and show up with the knowledge and understanding of your role. Express where your interests lie and don't be afraid to reach out, be curious and ask what opportunities will given to you. I would recommend looking at JDE's annual reports and careers website to learn more about the company. Are you engaged by JDE's values and goals? As mentioned prior, JDE embraces individuality and welcomes all types of talent with an open-mind so therefore, as cliché as it sounds remember to be yourself!
