    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Looking at green and roast coffee and characterising it using various methods. Altering roasting parameters and conditions to obtain different outcomes of the roasted coffee. Tasting different roasted coffees to see the impact of changing conditions. Working in the pilot plant to carry out research into green and roasted coffee. Working in the office to put together data I have collected and to review and update various documents. Supporting the pilot plant in trials and any way they may need. Looking at how to upgrade current roasting practices.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have developed my time management skills and I have to plan my day in order to fit in everything that I need to. I have extended my team working skills where I have been involved in group projects. I have gained new knowledge of the different equipment in the pilot plant and how I can use it in order to gain data that is useful to me and my projects. I have also learnt how to use new software and how to operate the computer system that the pilot plant uses.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, I am given a lot of responsibility! I am given tasks but I have to structure how/when I carry them out in order to fit into the rest of my work. I also have freedom over things like carrying out projects and deciding how best to go about them. Once I am confident enough I am free to operate equipment by myself.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Lots, there is always someone to turn to if you have any issues/need support. They make sure that you are confident enough in what you're doing to be able to carry out tasks by yourself/operate equipment.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Jacobs Douwe Egberts
  • Prepare for your assessment centre well and do your research on the company and its values and history. Don't worry about not knowing much about the coffee process/the equipment because they will teach you everything you need to know. Be prepared to be given a lot of responsibility from day one!
