    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I worked as part of an International Central Design team working on a range of small to large scale design tasks. My responsibilities included creating assets and designing wireframes and page mockups for Disney, Disney Tickets, National Geographic and other brands' online products, including disney.xx websites across EMEA.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Definitely. I have become a stronger Designer and feel more confident using software that is specific to my field. I have also learned to use new software and feel comfortable creating wireframes and even prototypes in Figma as well as learning to do basic animations in Adobe After Effects. I have also developed skills outside of design, including presenting as well as working well within a team.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given more responsibility as I grew into the role. I never felt overwhelmed and I was comfortable handling every task given to me. My manager challenged me and pushed me to take on more responsibility as the month went past and this included large scale design projects which involved dealing directly back and forth with our clients.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • My manager as well as my team were always there to support me and answer any questions I had, whether it be directly related to work or purely out of the interest in personal development

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • As most of my internship was online, it was initially difficult to gauge company culture. We had a range of weekly zoom calls as well as monthly zoom calls with the wider team of 200 people and less often company-wide zoom calls - on occasion these involved fun virtual gatherings (Christmas + Thanksgiving). It did feel like there was a 'Disney' culture in the office - lots of events and things to get involved with outside of work.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I loved my internship. I genuinely feel it was probably the best year of my life, being able to work at such a beloved brand and be trusted to do important design work. I enjoyed working as part of a team and feeling as though I was able to contribute to the magic of the company and its products. I felt like a full time employee and not 'just an intern'. I was always encouraged to learn and grow to push myself to my highest potential.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to The Walt Disney Company
  • Just be yourself. You don't have to be a massive Disney fan or know lots of niche knowledge about the company. Remember that everyone that works there is just like you. They are looking for someone who will be good at what they do and will bring passion, excitement and enthusiasm to the role. No different to any other company, you should show them that you would be good fit for their team and the right person for the job.
